We visited as a guest of Knott’s Hanging out with friends and going to theme parks are two of my absolute favorite things to do. When you put them together, you get one very happy teenager. My mom surprised me with tickets to go to Knott’s Scary Farm for the first time on Friday. So, in honor of all the teenagers going with their friends, I decided to write a guide to go to Knott’s Scary Farm with friends. This year was my first time attending Knott’s Scary Farm, and I was extremely terrified. My older brother has been going since he was in 6th grade and never found the courage to go. This year I finally felt ready, and it wasn’t that bad. That’s my first tip, make sure you are ready before going. You have to make...

We visited as a guest of Irvine Park I have been going to the Irvine Park Railroad since I was a baby. Irvine Park Railroad is one of my favorite family traditions. Now that my brother and I are older, our friends ask us, “Do you guys still enjoy going to Irvine Park Railroad?” Well, let me give you the most straightforward answer…YES! Just because we are teenagers does not mean we don’t love panning for gold and decorating our own cookies. In fact, when we know that a holiday is coming up, we jump at the chance to go to Irvine Park Railroad. I know a lot of the activities they have at the park seem like they would only be appealing to toddlers and younger children, but adults forget that teenagers are kids too and probably wouldn’t...

We visited as a guest of Knott’s Berry Farm Knott’s Camp Spooky has always been one of my favorite things to do with my children during the Halloween season. I have been bringing my kids since they were babies, and unfortunately, two of my kids have transitioned to Knott’s Scary Farm, leaving me with just one kid who is young enough to still experience the fun. Since this is one of my last years with a kid young enough to experience the fun, I took my time with my son to make every moment matter. I turned off my cell phone, directed all of my attention into my son’s experience, and it ended up being one of my favorite visits to Knott’s ever. We started the day in Camp Snoopy. I kind of shed a tear remembering my now...

We visited as a guest of Legoland Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year because of all the fun family events happening across Southern California. One of our favorite family Halloween traditions is to visit Legoland California for their Brick-or-Treat Party Nights event. This year, we did something different and got the full-day package which allowed us to arrive at the theme park early. The night of the event, we got to Legoland around 1 pm, and the park was full of children dressed in Halloween-themed clothing. We joined some friends who were also visiting the Legoland and our children squealed with delight while going on the different attractions. They raced cars, splashed in the water feature, and flew high in the helicopters. The rides at Legoland are perfect for children of all ages to enjoy. As the...

We dined as a guest of the venue Are you looking for somewhere fun and unique to take the kids for a Halloween treat? I recently brought my kids to one of the newest hot spots in the OC, Nitrolado, for some of their mouthwatering ice cream. The store is located in the heart of Garden Grove, and they use dry ice to make frightfully fun treats for kids to enjoy during the Halloween season. When we arrived at Nitrolado, our kid’s eyes lit up with delight when they saw all the steam coming out of the ice cream makers. They didn’t want to stop watching them making ice cream until I pointed out the tasty candy bar. We then went over to select our toppings from the vast selection of candies and our ice cream flavor. The day...

Donate Your Costume’s to Homeless OC Children

The Orange County Rescue Mission is urgently seeking the community’s help to provide nearly 100 Halloween costumes for its record number of homeless children living at the Village of Hope, the Rescue Mission’s transitional living facility. Orange County Rescue Mission President Jim Palmer explains that many of these children have experienced traumatic life events that children their age should never have to encounter, which is why creating opportunities to be social and enjoy a common interest among other children their age is crucial to their well-being and development. The Orange County Rescue Mission is seeking a total of 93 different costumes and up to 500lbs of candy for the upcoming “Trunk or Treat” community event being organized by Mission Bible Church, and taking place on Monday, October 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Rescue Mission....

‘Boo it Forward’ with Ghostbusters

Posted by on Oct 14, 2016 in Entertainment, Film, Halloween, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Product sample received One of our favorite things to do at Halloween is to “Boo” our friends. Every year, the kids go shopping for fun trinkets and treats to make Halloween-themed care packages for their friends. Then comes the fun part when we tip toe around in the dark in hopes of not being caught secretly delivering the care packages to all our friend’s houses. This year, we made our “Boo” care packages a little different. Since the new Ghostbusters movie just came out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 11th, we created ghostly themed care packages for all our friends (minus the green slime). We filled the packages with mini rubber ghosts, candy, and a copy of “Ghostbusters: Answer The Call.” We also included a reminder to “Boo it Forward” by making a care package and delivering it...

DIY Easy Mermaid Costume

I love making my kids Halloween costumes. Since I take the kids to so many different Halloween events throughout the season around Orange County, my kids usually end up needing more than one costume a year. Since my daughters favorite television show is Mako Mermaids, she wanted me to make her a mermaid costume this year. I had to stop and think for a few minutes about how I would make a skirt that she could walk in, and after a trip to our local fabric store, I had figured it out. Originally I thought this was going to be a hard costume to make, but it ended up being one of the easiest costumes I have ever made. It required only a few materials, and I was done making it in less than a couple of hours....

Visiting Knott’s Spooky Farm has been a yearly tradition that our family has enjoyed since our kids were toddlers. I can still remember the time when my youngest was still in diapers trick-or-treating around Camp Snoopy, and now he is all grown-up. Our kids kept asking when we were going to Knott’s Spooky Farm, and we surprised them with a day at the theme park over the weekend. It was an incredibly hot day to visit Knott’s, so we didn’t have the kids come in their costumes to trick-or-treat like we have in the past. Our day started in Camp Snoopy where I watched the...

Five Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

Posted by on Oct 30, 2015 in Halloween, Holiday | 0 comments

It’s that time of year when our bellies fill with candy, creepy costumes are adorned, and haunted houses are the norm. However, with all the ghoulish giddiness of the holiday, it’s easy to forget the importance of keeping everybody safe. Be sure to follow these pointers when it comes to trick-or-treating: Go in Groups. Kids should not trick or treat alone. Walk in groups and always have a trusted adult tag along to supervise (depending on the age, of course). Glow With a Light. It’s a good idea to have at least one, if not more, flashlights, glow wear/sticks to help kids see when hitting up the neighbors. Go Slow on the Sidewalk. To prevent an accident, encourage kids to walk, not run—on sidewalks—and look both ways. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, “If there are no...

Don’t miss creating spooktacular memories with your family during Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort from now until November 1st. Posted by on Oct 8, 2015 in Big Bear, Halloween, Holiday, Travel | 0 comments

This year Halloween is on a Saturday, which makes it an ideal time to get away with the little tykes for a grand “trick or treat” extravaganza in the mountains. On Halloween night, Big Bear Village becomes extensively decorated with jack-o-lanterns, cobwebs, flying bats, strobe lights, and other gadgets and gimmickry to create a “frightfully” fun Halloween experience. New this year is a unique display of scarecrows scattered throughout Big Bear Village that adds to the festive atmosphere. The streets of Big Bear Village shut down and transform into a massive gathering of goblins, ghouls, witches, princesses, super heroes and presidential candidates. More than 100 village merchants hand out thousands of dollars worth of candy and other goodies to “trick or treaters.” Village merchants created this event to ensure a safe and secure environment for families to enjoy the...

FrankenMunch: Chocolate Covered Candy Corn Popcorn

Posted by on Oct 7, 2015 in Halloween, Holiday | 0 comments

Fuel your little goblins and ghouls this Halloween season with this tasty FrankenMunch popcorn. The chocolate covered candy corn popcorn is super easy to make, and will make all the kids happy at your upcoming Halloween party. The best part about this recipe is that your kids can help with 99% of the process making it a great bonding experience with your kids. I was laughing in the kitchen with my kids as we attempted to drizzle the melted chocolate over the popcorn. We did have a little trouble getting the chocolate thin enough to drizzle properly, so we ended us using our hands to mix the popcorn with the chocolate – it came out the same way, and I learned that I am challenged when it comes to melting chocolate properly. What do you need? 1. Popcorn!...

DIY Jack-O-Lantern Mason Jar Candle Holders

Posted by on Oct 6, 2015 in Crafts, Halloween, Holiday | 0 comments

It’s not too late to start your Halloween crafting, and if you’re like me, you’re probably looking for something simple to make with the kids. While I loved to make elaborate crafts before I had kids, I now only try and make things that they can be a part of at least 90% of the process. When I was walking around Michael’s last night getting supplies for my son’s school reading project, I stumbled across a table set-up to inspire making these adorable “jack-o-lantern mason jar” candle holders. While I wish that I could take all the credit for the creativity – I have to give it to the talented employees at our local Michael’s store. There are two ways to make the mason jars orange. You can purchase the orange tinted mason jar cups at Michael’s which...

Creating Spooktacular Memories at the Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch

Posted by on Oct 5, 2015 in Featured, Halloween, Holiday | 0 comments

We visited as a guest of the IPR The Irvine Park Railroad has always been one of our favorite places to create special family memories together during the holiday season. No matter how old my children get, they still love coming to visit the Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch. With my younger son being kept busy with football almost every day of the week, I visited the park this year alone with my two older children. We started out our visit with my kids guessing the weight of the giant pumpkin. They love trying to lift the massive pumpkin and estimating its weight for a chance to win a special prize. Once we had our tickets…it was time for the fun to begin. Our first stop was at the pumpkin ring toss. The best part about the games at...

DIY Bing Bong Costume

Posted by on Sep 29, 2015 in Halloween, Holiday | 0 comments

Who doesn’t love Bing Bong? Our entire family fell in love with the character from the movie “Inside Out” the minute we watched the film. When it came to deciding what the kids wanted to be for Halloween, they all insisted on being characters from “Inside Out.” There was only one problem. The Disney Store did not make any “Inside Out” costumes this year, and we were only able to find a limited supply of Joy, Disgust and Anger online. No Bing Bong! I purchased a Joy costume for myself, Disgust for my daughter and Anger for my older son. Transforming my husband in Fear was easy by purchasing him a purple t-shirt and spray painting his hair purple. Bing Bong..was a little more difficult. How did we do it? Together with my daughter, we used our imagination...

Spreading Awareness with the Teal Pumpkin Project

Posted by on Nov 3, 2014 in Halloween | 0 comments

Food allergies impact the lives of millions of children. While some children love dressing up and collecting a giant bucket of candy on Halloween, the day is much different for children with food allergies. Every year, my son runs around the neighborhood with his friends collecting candy, just to not be able to eat any of it – but he still wants to participate in the fun. This year, families were encouraged to place a teal pumpkin on their porch if offering candy alternative to trick-or-treaters, and I could not wait to participate. The response was immense. I still had a bowl full of sugary candy to pass out, but also a giant bowl of Mutant Mania toys for children who inquired about the Teal Pumpkin Project. When the doorbell rang, multiple children asked for candy alternatives, and...

Tips for Keeping the ‘Scary’ Safe at Halloween

Posted by on Oct 28, 2014 in Halloween, Holiday, Uncategorized | 1 comment

Creepy costumes, blood and gore, ghosts, goblins and gravestones all conjure up images of Halloween. As adults, most of us know that Halloween is a relatively harmless holiday that supposedly originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, November 1 was a time to honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. However, most young children cannot grasp the historical and secular background of Halloween like adults. Children see scary costumes and haunted houses and their anxiety can reach a feverous pitch. So how can a parent safely expose children to Halloween without causing an overload of fear and anxiety? “Parents need to keep in mind their child’s developmental level and their sensitivity to...

Halloween should be scary in a fun way. But an asthma attack can take the fun out of the night and make the scare far too real. To keep this Halloween focused on tricks and treats, parents of kids with asthma can be proactive about managing their child’s asthma before trick or treating. Here are seven safety tips to keep your child having fun this Halloween: Unmask – Costumes and masks may contain latex, a known asthma trigger. Read the label before purchasing. Not wearing a mask is best, or wear a half-mask to making breathing easier. If your child is wearing a costume that has been stored for a while, be sure to wash it. Stored costumes can collect dust, molds and dust mites that can cause asthma symptoms in children with asthma. Frightful Fun – Hay...
