Horses and Dragons features approximately a dozen species of seahorses and seadragons and their relatives. These beautiful creatures are amazing to see up close and personal.  The knowledgeable and friendly Aquarium staff can relay all sorts of interesting facts about these animals.  One of our family’s favorites was learning that in most species of seahorses and sea dragons, the male carries the egg in a brood pouch. We thought this was such a fun fact, and as a mother of three I personally applaud these Daddies for enduring pregnancy! Vanishing Animals is the Aquarium’s new exhibition focusing on the issue of ocean extinctions and how to prevent them. Recent research reveals that we are at a crucial...

We attended as a guest of the Aquarium There’s a new Penguin that was just born at the Aquarium Of The Pacific in Long Beach. Her proud Magellanic Penguin parents are Roxy and Floyd, and her siblings are Heidi, Anderson, and Skipper. They learn the sex of the chicks by taking a blood test, which I found that to be pretty interesting. They did not put Lily on display until now because she had to grow her watertight feathers in a process called fledging. When we first met Lily she was simply adorable. First Baby Zebra Shark Makes Debut Today at The Aquarium of the Pacific

Posted by on Jan 27, 2015 in Aquarium of the Pacific, Events, Theme Parks | 1 comment

The Aquarium of the Pacific just made their official announcement that they were the first aquarium to successful reproduce a baby zebra shark through artificial insemination. More than 100 million sharks in the wild are killed annually due to human impact. Being able to artificially inseminate large shark species like the zebra shark can further research in helping dwindling shark populations in the wild. The 10-month-old sharks are now on exhibit in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon shallow pool. Fern, approximately 20 years old, is the mother of the two female sharks. Fern arrived to the Aquarium in 1997. She was inseminated in September 2013, and both babies hatched from their eggs in late March of 2014. The Aquarium’s experts have been caring for the youngsters in their behind-the-scenes shark nursery. The zebra shark pups are now about 2-and-a-half to...

We attended as a guest of the Aquarium Aquarium of the Pacific, the fourth most attended aquarium in the entire United States, happens to be located right next door to Orange County in downtown Long Beach. The non-profit Aquarium’s mission is to “instill a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems.”*  With more than 11,000 animals in over 50 exhibits this aquarium has something for everyone from experienced oceanographers to toddlers just getting their feet wet (so to speak), and everyone in-between. Starting May 23, in addition to their permanent exhibits, the Aquarium rolled out its new Summer of Wonder program featuring new exhibits and interactive experiences. Summer of Wonder focuses on endangered species – from Southern California to the South Pacific – and helps educate visitors on the part they can play...

Food, live music, art displays, and great educational programs bring the plight of the urban ocean and how humans are impacting its delicate balance to our consciousness. Over 10,000 people are expected over the course of the two-day event. The festival will also feature mini cruises aboard a double-deck yacht around the Long Beach Harbor select weekends though the summer to really bring the concept of ocean responsibility front and center. My tween and teen girls and I had the opportunity to preview this cruise and were treated to a morning of fun and education. Our 2 hour harbor cruise was treat enough. Journey Through The Rainforest of the Ocean at The Aquarium

Posted by on Feb 4, 2014 in Aquarium of the Pacific, Events, Theme Parks | 0 comments

Families are invited on a special journey through the Rainforest of the Ocean on Wednesday, February 5th, at The Aquarium of the Pacific. Expert, Paul Barber, will share his photos and research of the marine life found in Indonesia and the Coral Triangle. Dr. Barber is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he teaches marine science. Fifteen years ago, Barber began studying marine biodiversity in Indonesia, which is part of a greater region known as the Coral Triangle. The Coral Triangle is home to a marine environment so diverse that it rivals that of an Amazonian rainforest. Despite its biodiversity, Dr. Barber realized that this was one of the least-studied marine environments on the planet, as well as one of the most threatened. One of Dr. Barber’s goals is to...

New Year Miracle Spotting of Rare Orca Whales

Posted by on Jan 1, 2014 in Aquarium of the Pacific, Events, Featured, Theme Parks | 1 comment

It was a true New Year miracle today as we had a rare spotting of seven Orca whales off the coast of Long Beach this afternoon. My family had just spent the morning at the park, followed by a relaxing lunch when we got the media alert that Orca whales had just been spotted off the coast of Long Beach. We grabbed our jackets, cameras and headed down to catch the last boat out of the harbor with hopes that we would also have the opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their natural environment. My children had only thought of Orca whales as splashing water on them and performing to music in an aquarium at Sea World. They had never envisioned them as wild creatures living in our beautiful ocean until today. The sun was starting to...

On Friday the 13th, we embarked on the new Harbor Breeze Cruise TRIUMPHANT for a morning of Whale Watching with the experts from the Aquarium of the Pacific.  In the past week the staff of the Aquarium and Harbor Breeze Cruises have spotted a sperm wale, a pod of more than 20 Orcas (killer whales) and humpback and grey whales.  So the experts are saying this could be the winter of the whale.  There is a lot of migrating going on and it is the perfect time to embark on a two hour cruise and see some unbelievable sights. While we did not see Orcas on our cruise we did see very rare pods of dolphins, THOUSANDS of them.  Captain Dan said he had only seen that amount of dolphins one other time in his 20+ year career,...
