Epic Los Angeles to Las Vegas Road Trip

Posted by on Sep 11, 2017 in Featured, Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia One of our favorite summer road trips was when we went off the beaten path from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Normally, when going on a Las Vegas road trip, we can’t wait to get to the city and drive all the way to Vegas with as minimal stops as possible. This year, we did things differently and turned a four-hour drive into a 12-hour drive, and it was the best Las Vegas road trip ever! If you make this road trip, you’ll want to leave early! Leaving from Los Angeles or Orange County will take about the same amount of time, and your family can easily accomplish all these stops, and make it to Vegas before sundown. You’ll want to load up your Kia with plenty of snacks and water for the...

The World’s Tallest Thermometer

Posted by on Aug 3, 2017 in Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia One of our favorite things to do while on our way to Las Vegas is to make a stop at the World’s Tallest Thermometer in Baker California. It only takes a few minutes out of your road trip, and the stop is a must. The town of Baker is a great place to get a refreshing drink at The Mad Greek Cafe and stock up on some alien jerky before checking out how HOT it is in the middle of the desert at the world’s tallest thermometer. Once our kids and luggage get loaded into our Kia Sorento, I always ask the kids how hot they think it might be by the time we reach the world’s tallest thermometer. All of the kids make their guesses, and I bring a small prize along...

Desert Roadside Attraction: Alien Fresh Jerky

Posted by on Jul 31, 2017 in Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia We have traveled from Orange County to Las Vegas an endless amount of times, and the most we have done in Baker is stop for gas or a refreshment. On a recent road trip that I did with the kids, we wanted to see some new things, and that included a stop at the famous roadside attraction, Alien Fresh Jerky. Whenever we are driving through the desert, my kids are always obsessing about aliens. When I told them we were going to stop for some alien jerky, they were ecstatic. We first got some milkshakes at The Mad Greek Cafe and then drove down the street to Alien Fresh Jerky. The building was currently under construction, and they are in the process of building an alien hotel in the back! It was clear...

Cool Down from the Desert Sun at The Mad Greek

Posted by on Jul 27, 2017 in Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia After stopping at Zzyzx Road on our epic OC to Vegas road trip, the kids were in the mood for a refreshing treat. In the past, our family would always stop for a milkshake at The Bun Boy, but since they have gone out of business, we decided to try The Mad Greek instead. We arrived just before dusk, and the area was busy with families fueling up their cars with gas, getting some alien jerky, and grabbing a bite before getting back on the road. I pulled our Kia Sorento into the parking lot of The Mad Greek, and we made a dash from the air conditioned car into the air conditioned restaurant – it was about 120 degrees at the time! As we walked into the restaurant, the kids were enjoying...

Western American Railroad Museum

Posted by on Jul 26, 2017 in Featured, Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia Every kid loves trains. Ever since my boys were toddlers, they have loved everything about trains, and that love never seemed to end as they have gotten older. While planning our OC to Las Vegas road trip, I was looking for some new places to explore, and the Western American Railroad Museum came up on my radar. I had never heard of it before, and it is located in Barstow (just a quick stop on our way to Vegas), so I made plans to bring the kids to visit it. When we arrived at the railroad museum in our Kia Sorento, my boys squealed with delight. Outside of the museum were multiple train cars just waiting for my boys to explore. By the time that we had reached the museum, it was right...

Explore Rock Faces in the Mojave Desert

Posted by on Jul 25, 2017 in Autos, Kia, Las Vegas, Mojave Desert, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia Before leaving for our road trip from Orange County to Las Vegas, we had all our stops planned. Everything was perfectly timed so that we would have enough time to see everything we wanted before arriving in Vegas. While I was driving, my daughter noticed something online that caught her attention – Rock Faces. She immediately plugged the location into the GPS in our Kia Sorento, and we learned that it was along our route. Little did we know at the time that it was going to be an adventure we would remember forever. The GPS took us off the highway and into the heart of the Mojave desert in Victorville, and it told us to start driving along a dirt road. Keep in mind that I was traveling alone with my three...

Route 66: Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch

Posted by on Jul 7, 2017 in Autos, Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia Every time that we go to Las Vegas, we are always in a rush to get to the city to have some fun. This summer, I took the kids by myself to Zion National Park, and we made a quick stop in Las Vegas. Since I was traveling without my husband, I decided to take my time getting to Las Vegas and explore some stops along the small strip of Route 66 that was just a short detour on our way to Las Vegas. One of our favorite stops along Route 66 was Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch! The small area of Route 66 between OC and Vegas adds about an hour to your road trip (depending on how many times you want to stop and take cool pictures). Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch is...

Abandoned Town: Zzyzx Road

Posted by on Jul 1, 2017 in Autos, Kia, Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Vehicle provided by Kia We’ve all driven by the Zzyzx road sign on the way to Vegas, and I’ve always been curious about what is at the end of the road in the middle of nowhere. While on a summer road trip from OC to Vegas, I finally took the time to pull off the freeway to explore the abandoned town at the end of this famous road. As we drove down the road, I was glad that I was driving our AWD Kia Sorento because most of the road is not paved. As a mom, I’m not used to driving on dirt roads, and when I was on the dirt road, the Sorento handled just as well as it does on paved roads. We made our way down the windy road and took a moment to stop and...

Girls’ Getaway in Ojai

Posted by on Apr 3, 2017 in Ojai, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Visited as a guest of the venue A girls’ getaway doesn’t necessarily mean boarding a plane or heading to Vegas. Traveling a few counties over can be just as reenergizing to your mind and body, if not more so. We recently traveled to The Oaks at Ojai for a few nights, hoping to spend some quality time with our partner-in-crime. We split our time between on-site and nearby activities. Our first day, we stopped by Hip Vegan for lunch al fresco. Fresh vegetables and grains were the perfect way to kickoff our getaway. After check-in, there was time to catch an afternoon Qigong class. Focusing on centering and balancing ourselves, it was what we needed to get into a relaxed mindset. We also got to talking with Eve, who was visiting for some “me time”. She just received a...

Bodie – California’s Official Gold Rush Ghost Town

Posted by on Jul 20, 2016 in Las Vegas, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

Some people dream of seeing Paris, some dream of Hawaii, I on other hand dreamed of seeing Bodie.  Bodie?, yes Bodie.  Now before you rush to your web browser to find out what/where Bodie is I can give you the 411.  Bodie is a ghost town east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California, off the 395.  It’s quite a trek to travel to Bodie so if you are interested in visiting might I suggest making it a weekend getaway maybe stay at Mammoth Lakes or Lake Tahoe which are about an hour away in either direction.  The drive along the 395 is quite scenic and if you don’t pay attention you may pass Bodie Road so make sure at least one of you keeps an eye out.  Halfway through the 10 mile drive on...

The World’s Largest Treehouse at Bravo Farms

Posted by on Feb 18, 2016 in Cool Places, Road Trips, Yosemite | 1 comment

While on our way to Yosemite National Park, we had to make many stops along the way. While on one of our stops along the freeway, we discovered the world famous seven story treehouse at Bravo Farms in Traver. It was one of the most exciting discoveries while on our adventure, and one of the neatest places to explore while on your way to visiting Yosemite. We could have spent all day at Bravo Farms, and had trouble getting the kids to leave. There are nicknacks galore and so many neat little things to discover. The world’s tallest treehouse is the highlight of visiting Bravo Farms. It is seven stories, and I even had fun climbing up the small wooden staircase to the top of the massive treehouse. Playing in the treehouse is free, however, a donation is...

Fit for a King: Spending Time with the Sequoias in Central California’s Kings Canyon National Park

Posted by on Sep 10, 2015 in Featured, National Parks, Road Trips, Travel | 0 comments

There’s a measure of explanation that most likely needs to happen when you tell people you’re headed off to Kings Canyon National Park. Specifically, you should be prepared to tell people where exactly it is you’re going. Even though Kings Canyon covers close to 462,000 acres and has been a national park since 1940, it is oftentimes lumped together with the more famous Sequoia National Park. This tends to render it invisible. As such, you’re probably better off telling people that you’re off to the Sequoias, to do Sequoias-related things. They’ll understand and be appropriately excited for/jealous of you. They’ll have every right to express either emotion. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, as it is officially dubbed by the U.S. National Park Service, is an exceptional spot for outdoor adventure in Central California. This particularly rings true...

Sponsored The OC Mom Blog is hitting the road this weekend for an epic California road trip inspired by Oh and Tip’s road trip in the Dreamworks animated film “Home.” Toyota has generously given us Highlander to pack up our family of five and cruise up the coast for an unforgettable summer family vacation. Our first stop on the road trip will be in Monterey, California where we will “glamp” during the holiday weekend at the KOA campground. Our family will sleep comfortably in a small cabin and enjoy all the amenities that the KOA campgrounds offer families. While our family is in Monterey, we will visit the aquarium, play at the Dennis the Menace Park and explore the beautiful beaches. Once we leave Monterey, our next stop will be in Redding. Redding is a place that we have...
