Changing my life one heavy lift at a time with Crossfit

Training as a guest of Left Coast Crossfit

I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life. I’ve tried many different diets, joined fancy workout clubs, and I’ve never been successful with anything. I’ll do a crash diet, only to gain the weight back a couple of months later, plus a couple of extra pounds.

After becoming a father, losing weight became even harder. I work long hours, and my time with the kids is limited. While I never want to leave them in fear of missing out on special memories with them, my health has never improved. It has become important that I get healthy as I get older. Not only so that I can live a long life, but also to be a good role model for my children, encouraging them to live healthy lifestyles as they grow-up.

I spent three months at our local gym committed to getting myself into shape. What I found was that I would wander the gym not knowing where to start. I would start on one machine, and jump to other machines, not fully getting the benefits of the equipment – because I didn’t know how to use it properly. I didn’t know how to maximize my time in the gym to get the health benefits I needed from my workouts.

After three months of being committed and unsuccessful in a traditional gym, a friend of mine recommended that I try Crossfit. I’ll admit that I was hesitant and nervous about starting. I had seen videos of people lifting massive weights, and I never thought that would be a good fit for me.

My wife gave me a lot of encouragement, and I started my first day at Left Coast Crossfit in Laguna Hills. When I first arrived, I quickly learned that I was not going to be working out alone ever again. I had a trainer there to meet me, and to walk me personally through my first workout. He taught me, pushed me, and encouraged me throughout the entire session. When I thought that I could not go any further, he gave me the self-confidence I needed to have a successful workout.

The first night I came home winded and out of breath. It was that exact feeling that motivated me to keep coming back for more. I continued to work with a personal trainer until I was fully trained on the equipment and learned how to get the most out of my Crossfit workout before starting to train with other members.

Crossfit is not a gym, but a family. Nobody is left to wander the gym not knowing where to start – everybody works out together. Everybody pushes each other and motivates each other to get fit, healthy and strong.

I am now finishing my third week with a personal trainer, and will begin my group workouts this week, and I can’t wait! Within just a few short weeks, I have seen a difference in my body physique, energy level and overall health. I have started eating healthier and excited for what is to come in the next couple of months with Left Coast Crossfit.

Stay tuned as I will update you on my progress over the next couple of months, and follow along on a more frequent basis on twitter.
