Childhood Dream Comes to Life with The Harlem Globetrotters

When I was five, living in London, my life revolved around Scooby-Doo. I was a huge Scooby fan and watched every episode I could on the 3 TV channels available. One of my favorite episodes had to do with these wacky American men who twirled balls on their fingers and whistled a fabulous tune as they bounced a red, white and blue ball. I had no idea what game they were playing but man they were funny. They only visited Scooby a few times but I was hooked and wished they would visit more.

We moved to the States when I was 8 and by this time I had long forgotten about the fun men who wore red, white and blue shorts while dribbling balls for fun. It wasn’t until one Saturday morning, while watching cartoons that I heard a familiar whistle, Sweet Georgia Brown.

It was a commercial for these mean called the Harlem Globe Trotters and they were real people not cartoons! I screamed in excitement “they’re real they’re real” and begged my mom to see them. One huge problem, we lived in Orange County and they were playing in LA. My dear mother terrified of the new country we moved to and driving on the freeway looked at me and said no. Every year the commercial would come on for their tour and every year I would ask my mom to see them to which she reluctantly replied no to.

Many, many, many years later, my kids were watching Saturday morning cartoons and instead of fast forwarding through the commercials as I generally do I was busy cleaning the kitchen. Suddenly I hear the famous Harlem Globe Trotter whistle and freeze. The Trotters were going to be here in Orange County in one month and this time I was going (with my family of course but serious I WAS GOING). I know it sounds silly but it was a childhood dream come true.

I could hear the famous Trotter whistle as we parked our car at the Honda Center. In just a few minutes we would be sitting in our seats watching them perform. Soon the lights dimmed the Trotters came in with such an amazing energy. I sat back in awe of these giants. They were so talented and above all HILARIOUS!!!! As I watched their antics I was transported back to that five year old in London, I was half expecting Scooby to show up.

The Globe Trotter experience is phenomenal! They interact with their audience and laugh at themselves as well as the opposing team. They play light hearted jokes all the while keeping thousands of people entertained. The ring leader of this crew was Big Easy. The life of the party who brings to light the many talents his teammates have such as dunking balls with their feet to twirling a ball on their index finger then popping into the basket. You wouldn’t want to blink just in case you missed a fun trick.

The highlight of the night was a special backstage meeting with some of the team members. I couldn’t speak because I was in awe but I can tell you it was AMAZING!!!

The most surprising part of the experience came at the end when it was announced that the Trotters would wait courtside to meet and greet all their fans. Have you ever heard of anything like this before? I hadn’t, and was very impressed by it. Where else would you go to see such talent and then actually meet them? Yes I got to meet them backstage but that was arranged and it was just a couple of people not over a thousand!

The Harlem Globe Trotters tour often and the next time they come to town you need to go and see them. They also offer a very popular summer skill clinics and will be in Anaheim this summer. You can find information about their clinic as well as their tour information on their website and the next time they come to town I expect to see you all there!
