Acid reflux is a condition that many people suffer from. It happens when acid in the stomach acid creeps up into your esophagus and causes heartburn. There are many different factors that can cause acid reflux, but there are also ways to avoid acid reflux. Hiatal hernia

Hiatal hernia is one of the causes of acid reflux. It is caused by the stomach moving up into the chest, which increases acid exposure in the esophagus and throat. Avoiding acid reflux because of this condition includes eating smaller meals that are less acidic, to begin with, avoiding foods that trigger acidity like fatty/highly spiced foods including chocolate, caffeine products, alcohol, and tobacco smoke, cutting back on smoking entirely if at all possible since this itself will increase acidity levels in saliva making things worse for people who already have this condition.

Despite numerous campaigns against smoking on television and radio over recent years, there are still many people who continue this habit, not only do they suffer all these negative consequences but studies have shown that their children too are more likely to suffer acid reflux as a result of their parents smoking.

Pregnancy and childbirth 

Women can get acid reflux when they are pregnant or breastfeeding. The acid comes up from the stomach and causes heartburn, which is a burning sensation in your chest area. This can be caused by the change of hormones during pregnancy as well as an increase in blood flow to the esophagus (which reduces pressure on acid). Acid reflux also may cause you to produce more saliva than usual.

This condition usually does not require any treatment besides over-the-counter acid-reducing medications like TUMS® and other antacids that help neutralize acid and restore pH balance (and reduce symptoms such as indigestion). However, if it gets really bad then doctors suggest surgery for this problem called fundoplication, where parts of the upper part of the stomach are attached to the bottom of the esophagus.

Foods like these are acid reflux triggers because they cause the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus to relax, which can lead acid back into your throat. Avoiding these foods may help prevent acid reflux symptoms if you’re particularly sensitive to them.

Avoid eating for three hours before bedtime because anything that is too big for your esophagus to swallow whole can cause acid reflux. Avoid acidic foods such as tomato sauce, orange juice, and lemonade. Consuming food or drink with high acidity levels may increase the likelihood of acid reflux symptoms occurring at least temporarily after consumption.


As you can see it’s not too hard to avoid acid reflux if you know what causes it. A healthier lifestyle when it comes to food and smoking can do wonders in this regard, but sometimes it will require treatment like during pregnancy or hiatal hernia.
