A Day at the Races: Santa Anita Park

We attended as a guest of the venue

A Day at the Races

We were recently invited to enjoy a day at Santa Anita Park and take in this iconic location in Arcadia. As visitors who had never visited a racetrack, we were intrigued and excited to learn more about the gorgeous park both past and present.

Upon our arrival, we immediately notice the beautiful Art Deco design of the surrounding structures and the track; as we are greeted at the Club House. We’re in heaven as this is one of our favorite era’s! The recent $40 million renovation has us feeling as if we are stepping back in time for an elegant afternoon watching the races and meeting up with friends and family.

A wonderful observation of the patron’s in attendance, they have fun and take the time to get dressed up and take advantage of the era. A flurry of dapper hats, bow ties and suits for the men; elegant flowing dresses with lovely little handbags for the women. We appreciated seeing people taking an afternoon to engage with one another in such an elegant fashion.

Santa Anita Park was established and opened on Christmas Day in 1934. In the midst of the Great Depression, well this is proof that anything is quite possible. The venue hosts several very notable races each year; while we were in attendance it was Sunshine Millions and this year Santa Anita will be hosting the Breeder’s Cup World Championship in November 2016.

Throughout the day we enjoyed the grounds; taking in lunch at the Turf Terrace, known as the “best seat in the house”. We dined on a delightful array of serrano ham, calabrese salami, the most amazing creamy burrata, danish blue and other wonderful cheeses. Toasting and sipping champagne while watching the beautiful horses make their way to the finish line in each of the races. The menu choices are impressive and we indulged in a beautiful stacked ahi appetizer followed by one of the most generous lobster rolls we’ve seen. We would go back for the dining experience and ambiance; it’s a great afternoon date, special birthday, anniversary or maybe a few hours with friends.

If you are looking for a fun family outing with the kids, take them for an afternoon at the Infield. Yes, the infield is set up with all kinds of activities for the kids to enjoy. You’ll find it to have a carnival atmosphere reminiscent of the era but modern touches with hot dogs, picnic tables and inflatable slides. We can’t wait to go back and explore this area!

Another great opportunity to see the park in a different light is between the hours of 5am-9am on the weekends. We know it’s early! If you tuck the kids in early the night before and maybe prepare for a nap later in the day; you’re in for a great morning. This is when the jockey’s ride and warm the thoroughbreds on the track, giving you and your family an up close and personal interaction with both. After, head over to Clocker’s Corner, where you can enjoy a hot breakfast together; sitting alongside the jockey’s, owners and trainers. How fun! Right? We’re adding this to our must do this year!

As we discovered, you can take in Santa Anita Park in a variety of ways; as a couple, a family, a day with friends or maybe a special celebration. The amenities are beyond what we expected with Luxury Suites, a sports bar “The Gallop Out”, our favorite “Turf Terrace” or maybe you choose a day with the kids at the Infield. We highly suggest a visit to Santa Anita park, it’s iconic beauty, the reminder of an era past and all of it’s present day elegance are sure to impress you! Go have some fun and explore a Day at the Races!
