How to Detox Your Home

Last week I wrote about how I learned that my home was toxic from all the harsh chemicals that my housekeeper was using, and today I want to share how I detoxed my home. I’ll admit that it is so much easier to purchase household cleaners from the store to clean the house and that it is a lot of work to naturally clean the house, but it is worth it to raise children in a healthy living environment.

Cleaning Solution

Making a homemade all-purpose cleaner is the easiest thing in the world to do, and will save your family a lot of money. All you need to make a safe cleaner is a spray bottle, and mix equal parts of white vinegar and water – it’s that easy! (This solution also works great as a window cleaning solution)

Furniture Cleaning

When dusting my home, I always use my homemade furniture polish to avoid the dust from going into the air that my children breathe. In a jar mix 1/2 cup of olive oil with the juice from 1/2 of a lemon. A lot of my friends will add essential oils, but I have found that the lemon scent is refreshing enough in my home.

Carpet Care

Vacuuming the home on a daily basis in one of the best things you can do to detox your home. Humans shed about 1/5 oz. of dead skin flakes each week causing 80% of the material floating in the sunbeams of your home to be dead skin. Vacuuming regularly cuts down on the dead skin in your home. Keep the dust mites that eat the dead skin flakes of humans and animals out of your home by having a company that cleans your carpet without the use of chemicals, ZeroRezSocal, out every six months.

Other Household Tips

A typical mattress may have 100,000 to 10 million dust mites inside of it. Have your mattress cleaned on a regular basis! The drain in your sink typical has more than 50,000 bacteria per square inch. Clean the sinks in your home on a regular basis with the vinegar and lemon solution. My #1 tip is to never have a sponge in your home again. Sponges, rags, and towels harbor dangerous bacterias such as E. Coli and Staphylococcus.

  1. I disinfect my dish sponge after every use in the micro. What do you use if not a sponge for cleaning dishes?
