When talking with the Director of Monsters University, Dan Scanlon, we wanted to learn more about how they developed the Monsters University Story. There were so many different avenues that they could have pursued when making a second film, and the question keeps coming up, “Why College?”

In Monsters Inc., Mike said to Sulley, “You have been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade.”

This famous quote is one that everyone who loved Monsters Inc. remembers. Dan shared with us, “It was something that people brought up, and that they first noticed when beginning to work on the film.” When developing the story for the new film, the entire team explored the quote a lot, and they wanted to tell a story of how these guys met and became friends.

“To respect that line we would have to do Monsters Elementary, and that was not a story we wanted to tell,” said Scanlon. John Lasseter told us, “It will hurt both films if you do not tell it right.” Since they have known each other for a long time, it still supported the idea of telling the story of how they met while in College.

“We wanted it to be wild but yet tasteful. Since they are monsters, they can be a little wild.”

Having the film set when they were in college, “gave us an opportunity to share another place monsters go. It seemed classic, and we had never done a college movie before,” said Scanlon.

When the final idea came up about the film being based when Mike and Sulley were in college everyone got excited and said, “Oh we have great college stuff, and of course they went to college together,” said Scanlon.
