A Very Different Cinderella in “Into the Woods”

We attended the interview as a guest of Disney

The first thing that I noticed when watching “Into the Woods” was how different Cinderella was from what I had known her to be like all my life. The Cinderella I knew was transformed in a pumpkin patch and then dashed off to the ball in her big blue gown with glass slippers. While in “Into the Woods,” Cinderella wears a gold dress with golden shoes, and there are no talking mice or pumpkins. I had not read the original Grimm’s Fairy tale books. I didn’t know until after learning more about the film that the Cinderella in “Into the Woods” is based on the original Cinderella, and Anna Kendrick gave the character life in the film.

“I’m glad that some people are surprised by her but it is a Cinderella that has existed since about 1987.” Anna Kendrick

Kendrick had a very rich history in theatre and was perfectly cast for the role of Cinderella. Meryl Streep called Kenrick’s role one of the most complex in the film. The Director of the film, Rob Marshall, said, “I not only cast them for the talent and for playing the roles but I also cast them for who they are and I have to have around me people I like and people who are wonderful to work with and are there for the right reasons.”

“She lets you into this person who’s indecisive and not sure and wrestling, with what she’s feeling, and it’s a very brave personal, beautiful performance and I’m very proud of it. Very proud of her.” Rob Marshall

It is not often that a musical is brought to life in the film, and they did a wonderful job of presenting the classic musical in a beautiful way. “There is was a sense of honoring this beautiful piece. We’re all very lucky,” said Marshall. They had four weeks of rehearsal and two weeks of pre-records. Marshall talked about how the cast all worked hard and came together to be what he would call a “company.” “We were all so intimidated by the music. It just made me realize we’re all in the same boat,” said Kendrick.

“When you’re doing a movie musical it’s almost like doing two films at once in a way because you have that huge musical side of it. It’s a big portion of it, and it takes a lot of time to sort of do well.” Rob Marshall

When “Into the Woods” was on Broadway, there would multiple shows a week. While it is hard work for the cast of the theatre production, making it into a film is even more challenging. “you can’t lie on camera,” said Marshall.

“The joys of the piece are that you feel the character, even the imperfections of the voice. I don’t want perfect voices. I want the emotion and the actor to come out. That’s the most important thing.” Rob Marshall

The film had a combination of live and prerecorded music, “the test for me is it should always feel live. Like when you’re watching it, it should seem like it’s happening in the moment. You shouldn’t know where it’s live and where it’s not,” said Marshall. Kendrick sang a lot of her part live, “because she can,” said Marshall.

“It’s in your blood. Anna has it in her blood. You either have it or you don’t.” Rob Marshall
