Discover A Whole New World In Disney’s Aladdin

We attended as a guest of Disney’s Aladdin

One of the most beloved stories of all time is retold in the all-new live action film, Aladdin. The film is one of the most magical films that I have seen all year, and I couldn’t wait to talk with the cast about how they made this film so special.

The cast of Disney's Aladdin

I arrived in LA the day after seeing the movie and sat down with the cast to talk about the making of the film. I was waiting in the room for the cast to arrive when the moderator came into the room to make a special announcement. I got chills when she announced that the talented composer and songwriter, Alan Menken was going to perform some of his songs for us.

He came into the room, and everyone applauded. Then he sat down at the piano and started playing (and singing) clips from some of the Disney songs that he wrote and composed. I was holding my camera, trying to video record, but I couldn’t stop from feeling tears rolling down my cheeks. It was like he was playing my entire childhood on his piano.

Once everyone dried up their tears, the moderator came back into the room to announce the arrival of the cast of the film. The first question went to Mena Massoud (Aladdin) to see what he is most excited for people to understand about this film. I loved his response so much…

“I’m especially proud of the representation and the ethnically diverse casting that was put together for this. It’s not often you can go to a movie theater and see all people of color represented like this. It’s certainly something that I was missing in my childhood.” Mena Massoud

When it comes to Naomi Scott (Jasmine), she was our first Disney princess of color. In this film, Alan Menken wrote her the most powerful and moving song to sing. I cried the first time that I heard her sing the song in the film because it resonated so much with what the world needs to hear today.

“The fact that they wrote a song and I get to sing it, first of all, I was like wow. That’s already surreal. But also then when I heard it and just the words and the lyrics and how timely it was, the message behind the song and the idea of not going speechless, that everyone has a voice, doesn’t matter who you are, doesn’t matter what you look like, doesn’t matter what your gender, your voice matters. And speaking out against injustice matters. Not just standing by and being a spectator.” Naomi Scott

Naomi continued to say that she wanted the song to feel like it’s the world’s song, and people can take away from it what they need. All I know is that I cried when hearing the lyrics from the song, and her voice beautifully projected all the octaves.

The most powerful thing that I heard from Navid Negahban (The Sultan) during our time together was about the father/daughter dynamic. The words that he spoke were the ones that I remember strong in my mind, and as a parent will never forget.

“I believe the most important thing was for him to show how much he appreciates her. I think every father, no matter what, they see a princess in their little daughter.” Navid Negahban

He continued to say that he saw a princess inside of Naomi Scott (Jasmine). One day, they were on the set working. Some of the ladies were feeling stressed and yelling at the background actors. Naomi took the mic and went to the balcony and said, “Can be nicer to each other, can’t we?” That is the true princess inside of her.
