What Disney means to the Make-a-Wish Foundation

The Walt Disney Company has played a strong role in supporting the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The Walt Disney Company is focused on creating a place for families to spend memorable moments together, but is also devoted to our community. In 2013, $370 Million dollars were donated, 667,013 VoluntEARS Hours spent giving back in our community by the Walt Disney Company employees, and 4 Million kids and families have been impacted.

The Make-a-Wish Foundation begin in 1980, and the first wish was a child wanting to come to Disneyland. Since that first day in 1980, over 85,000 children have chosen for their one wish to be Disney related. Children have wished to go to Disneyland, Disney Cruises, meet a Disney Character or go to a Disney Premiere.

As of today, nearly half of their 14,000 wishes granted annually are Disney related. “The numbers are only part of the story. We did a four year study on the impact of a wish, and 97% of the wish parents who experienced a Disney wish said that the Disney wish made their family stronger,” said David Williams, President and CEO, Make-a-Wish America. Williams was addressing attendees at the Discover Together Symposium, an event at the Disneyland Resort that brought together nearly 60 nonprofit organizations from across the country to explore ways to strengthen relationships that help kids thrive.

When a child is suffering from a life threatening medical condition, the entire family is affected. “They are experiencing Doctors, hospitals, and the uncertainty of the future,” said Williams.

“The annual support of the Walt Disney Company to the Make-a-Wish Foundation annual exceeds 10 million dollars a year. Their support goes beyond that. A lot of Disney executives have donated their time and personal resources to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. It is a relationship that expands decades,” said Williams.
