DIY Easy Mermaid Costume
I love making my kids Halloween costumes. Since I take the kids to so many different Halloween events throughout the season around Orange County, my kids usually end up needing more than one costume a year. Since my daughters favorite television show is Mako Mermaids, she wanted me to make her a mermaid costume this year. I had to stop and think for a few minutes about how I would make a skirt that she could walk in, and after a trip to our local fabric store, I had figured it out.
Originally I thought this was going to be a hard costume to make, but it ended up being one of the easiest costumes I have ever made. It required only a few materials, and I was done making it in less than a couple of hours.
Supplies needed:
1 Teen wire bra (you can pick the color that you want)
1 Package of store bought shells (please don’t take shells from our local beaches – they are protected)
1 Pair of gymnastic shorts
1 Glue gun
1 Glue sticks
2 Yards of shimmering fabric
1 Yard of ribbon
Directions:
1. Use the glue gun to glue the shells onto the bra.
2. Cut the fabric into the shape of a mermaid tail. If your fabric has a tule edge then leave a strip attached to the top of the skirt. Otherwise, sew a ribbon to the top of each side of the skirt.
3. Have your daughter put on the bra and shorts. Then tie the mermaid tail “skirt” around her waist.
4. Viola! You now have a perfect DIY mermaid costume.
Happy Halloween!!
