On Friday, June 5th, the Eifman Ballet of St Petersburg debuted their West Coast premier of Boris Eifman’s new Up and Down at Segerstrom Center for the Arts (SCFTA).

The tragic ballet enacts the irony of a world enslaved by betrayal and darkness. In his own words, director Eifman explains the ballet “is to remind us of the fatal consequences of a man betraying himself.”*  The tragedy portrayed in the ballet, juxtaposed to a beautiful, carefree world depicted in the jazz-enspired ensembles, creates a balance that many a ballet enthusiasts are sure to enjoy.  By the end of the night, audiences were on their feet cheering the company’s performance.

I had the pleasure of attending the ballet with a friend for a Mom’s night out.  Between us we have eight kids, all under six years old, so two golden hours where there were absolutely no words uttered (our kids have used all our words for the entire decade already!) and we simply watched people float across the stage with effortless beauty, were a luxury to enjoy.
