El Mesón de Chucho el Roto in Querétaro, Mexico

We dined as a guest

After arriving in Querétaro, Mexico, I couldn’t wait to sink my taste buds into some authentic cuisine. I was visiting some friends in the area, and they had recommended that my first meal in the city be at the popular dining destination, El Mesón de Chucho el Roto.

The restaurant is located in the heart of the city and features a relaxing outdoor dining patio where guests can hear live music from the center and enjoy beautiful views of the historic building surrounding the center.

When we arrived, we were taken to a table on the patio where we sipped on hibiscus water and enjoyed the live music. Grasshoppers are one of my favorite things to enjoy while in Mexico, and my daughter had yet to try it, so we ordered some Sopes de Chapulín (grasshoppers). She was so nervous to take her first bite, but after she tasted the delicious sopes, she was in heaven. She savored every bite of the flavorful dish and was left craving more.

Along with the sopes, we had some traditional quesadillas that were filled with melted cheese, vegetables, and meat. There is nothing better than a freshly made quesadilla in the heart of Mexico.

For the main course, I couldn’t resist having the chile en nogada. This traditional dish isn’t anything you can get in the United States and is my ultimate favorite. The dish is usually served in honor of Mexican Independence Day and features the three colors of the Mexican flag; green, white and red. It features a meat stuffed poblano chile, topped with a walnut cream sauce, pomegranate seeds and parsley.

Another thing that you cannot get anywhere else is enchiladas Querétaro. People come from all over to get a taste of these popular enchiladas that feature Oaxacan cheese, potatoes and topped with a cream sauce. They were the best enchiladas that my daughter and I have ever tasted, and I highly recommend ordering it when dining at El Mesón de Chucho el Roto.

Our meal ended with some flan that we savored before spending the evening walking along the cobblestone streets in Querétaro. We purchased some snacks from a street cart, watched live entertainment, and enjoyed the crisp cool evening air. When visiting Querétaro, make plans to go on an unforgettable epicurean adventure at El Mesón de Chucho el Roto.
