Emily Blunt plays the baker’s wife in the film “Into the Woods.” One thing that people in the theater will more than likely not notice when watching the movie was that Emily Blunt was pregnant during the making of the film. In fact, she was seven and a half months pregnant towards the end of filming. We talked with Blunt about what it was like to be pregnant while making the film and how the film has impacted her as a parent.

“The irony of playing a barren woman.” said Emily Blunt

Blunt found out that she was pregnant right after getting cast for the role in the film. She thought to herself, “she’s the baker’s wife, so it doesn’t matter if I gain a few pounds.” She was in her second trimester when they started rehearsals. When they first started filming “I had so much energy, so elated,” and when they wrapped the film she was in the, “I’m tired, I’m fat stage,” said Blunt.

“I found out I had the part the same week I found out I was having a baby. I spent the next seven weeks preparing that I might not be able to play the part. Rob might say, ‘I don’t think we can do it’ because I was going to be 7 1/2 months pregnant by the end of the shot. He did and hid me behind a cow, and James Corden….” Emily Blunt

Blunt didn’t realize how much running around her character was going to have in the woods, “I did a body slam into Anna Kendrick like a linebacker, and she’s a tiny person. I like, almost killed her,” said Blunt. With all the running she had to do while on the set of the film there was a chair onset with a sign that said, “Emily Blunt’s pregnancy chair.” She talked about how there were many times she would find Chris Pine sitting on her chair, and she would just stand over him. “He went oh, do you wanna sit down, and I’m like, yes, I do,” said Blunt.

“It was daunting but a complete life enhancing experience.” Emily Blunt

When it comes to how the film has impacted Blunt as a parent, she said, “It’s important to teach your children that life is not always going to be easy, and that is what this film is about.” The film is based on the original Grimm’s fairytales, “obviously children can’t understand the deep metaphorical meanings in these fairy tales, but they understand right and wrong, and they understand the need to make decisions, and they understand what happens when people behave badly, they get a comeuppance,” said Blunt.

“I think these fairy tales, were created to teach children about life…warn them about life.” Emily Blunt

Don’t miss seeing Emily Blunt as the baker’s wife in the film “Into the Woods” that’s in theaters now.
