Better Birding Basics: Bird Identification

Join a group of bird lovers as they identify and watch the behavior of winter birds in Limestone Canyon. Come watch high in the sky for the birds’ different flight patterns and down on the ground for their foraging behaviors. Bring your binoculars, or some are available for your use. This program is part of Better Birding Basic Series. You can attend all three as a series or choose to attend one individually. Please wear sturdy shoes suitable for hiking, along with sun protection such as a hat and sunscreen. Free event runs 8:00am – 11:00pm for ages 12 and up. Register online. Join Ranger Zak along with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers and bring your young ones (infant to age three) to explore Aliso’s wild backyard. We will see bugs, animal tracks, plants, birds and have all kinds of outdoor fun! Walk runs 9:00am – 11:00am. Join us for songs, stories, and surprises at one of these two weekly identical storytimes!  Sometimes we do experiments, sometimes we make crafts–There’s always something fun when we get the preschoolers together!  Perfect for ages 2-5.

We are thrilled to be able to offer this great activity, even during the summer! Each child gets 15 minutes to practice reading aloud to a dog. reservations are a MUST! (Because each child has a reserved 15-min slot, promptness is appreciated!) No cost. Ages 5+. Event runs 3:30pm – 4:30pm.

Each night after the sun sets, the twinkling stars come out for a fun game of connect the dots! Draw a line here, connect it over there and what do you get? A Dragon! Come explore our night sky as we discover the creatures in our constellations during this summertime evening hike. This program is a perfect evening adventure for children 6 – 10 years of age. We will spend time exploring our program’s topic out on the trails to better connect our natural history knowledge with the surrounding canyon. Our hike is a 2 – 3 mile trek along uneven terrain, with possible hills and moderate elevation for children. This is not ideal for off-road strollers. Parent or guardian must register and attend along with their child. Free event runs 7:00pm – 8:30pm for ages 6 and up. Register online. Driving directions emailed upon registration.

Brea Fest lights up the Civic & Cultural Center on Friday, August 21 from 6:30 – 10 p.m. This community favorite is the City’s original food fest that celebrates the arts with a feast of delicious food and beverages from over 30 outstanding restaurants. This free family event draws thousands each year with great live bands, outdoor dancing, a gallery exhibit and artist demonstrations, along with theatre performances. The ever-popular “Kidsville” also returns with kid-pleasing food and entertainment, face painting and make-and-take crafts. Food and beverage samples are provided with taste tickets being sold for only $3 each. The event inspires as it also helps to support the arts in Brea, such as Curtis Theatre productions, Brea Gallery exhibits, Concerts in the Park, and arts education programs.

OC Parks is pleased to announce Mason Movie Nights Under the Stars! Please join us for this fun event! Bring a chair or blanket and find a spot on the grass in Mason Park’s beautiful amphitheatre. You are welcome to bring your own non-alcoholic beverages, etc.  Come a little early to enjoy a free raffle!  Reservations are not necessary.  Parking will be free after 5:30 p.m. and the movie will begin around sunset (approximately 7:30 p.m.).
