Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow mommies! There are a few nature walks taking place on Sunday if you tire of lounging about in your pajamas (ha!).

This Saturday is the inaugural Fishing Derby at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. Only kids 15 and under can fish between 9:00am and 12:00pm and it is free! The Eleventh Annual Battle of the Mariachis Festival takes place at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano at 11:00am. The Fullerton Museum Center is hosting a Heroes and Villains Family Day also on Saturday beginning at 12:00pm. Enjoy your week!

Our mission
is to encourage enthusiasm about learning in a hands-on environment that opens the world even to the youngest child. Our museum features 7 galleries and 14 different hands on exhibits, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dinosaur topiary and historic 1942 caboose, the Museum features an exhibit which changes 3 times a year. The Children’s Museum welcomes local, national and international visitors. Children can ride a kid-size carousel, take a walk in T-Rex’s footprints, pet an Arctic fox, pump gas, drive a bus, dress up and perform, and dig for fossils all in one afternoon!

The spring/summer exhibit is California Full of Life and it opens Tuesday, March 31 and runs through August 24, 2015. This exhibit introduces guests to the ecosystem diversity found in our beautiful Golden State. Visit the deserts, beaches, mountains, and redwoods and learn about the life cycles of plants and wildlife. Have fun on a mini camping trip at the Museum. Learn about living in a tent, camping foods, camping gear, and California state parks & wildlife. Wednesday, May 6: Little Picasso Family Art Center – Make a “paint” date every Wednesday (11:00am – 3:00pm) at the Museum for lots of messy time exploring color and texture! There are easels, washable paints, brushes and paint smocks ready for little artists to use. This is a drop in art studio and subject to change. All programs free with paid admission (Kids and Adults $8, La Habra residents $7, Kids Under 2 Free).

Thursday, May 7: Mother’s Day Craft – We’re providing the supplies to make a special something for Mom today! Event runs 11:00am – 3:00pm in the Family Art Center. Free with Museum admission.

Saturday, May 9: Rocket Launch – Join us for a free family event at The Boeing Company for our annual Rocket Launch! This hands-on day is full of activities for all ages and includes a competition where you’ll design, build and launch your own rocket! Event runs 9:00am – 2:00pm.

  • Build your own rocket from a 2-liter plastic soda bottle at home or on-site (please bring your own bottle).
  • Design and attach a parachute. The payload with the longest “hang time” in the air wins!
  • Bring your own chairs and sunscreen (no pop-ups or large umbrellas please).
  • Indulge in Southern California’s top gourmet food trucks.
  • Meet astronaut Yvonne Darlene Cagle, M.D. and take your photo with her!

National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers runs January 17 – May 3, 2015. Travel to the wildest places on earth in National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers. The newly renovated Kidseum is high-tech and interactive with a focus on its new mission, “Igniting imagination through exploration,” stressing the excitement of art and archaeology. Be sure to check out the new “Glow Cave” with its fun art making activities, ride the magical Wells Fargo stagecoach through time in the “Green Screen Time Machine,” and explore archaeology like never before in our new Archaeology Lab. Sunday, May 10: Junior Archaeologist – Become an archaeologist for a day – think, learn, explore and get your hands dirty! Participate in an archaeological dig, learn how to record your findings and create an artifact to take home. Activities run 10:30am – 12:30pm. Spots are limited and advance reservations are recommended at least 3 days prior to event date. Fee: Admission, plus $10 for every participating child ages 4 and up. Pretend City Children’s Museum features a small, interconnected city designed to “build better brains” through purposeful play, hands-on learning experiences, role playing, and educational programming. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization serving all children, it depends on community-based funding and guest support. Through 17 interactive exhibits and activities guided by a highly trained professional staff, children learn foundational math, reading and science skills, while fostering curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, organization, teamwork, self-confidence and socialization. The museum is a unique community resource offering developmental screenings and tools for families, educators and community agencies working to ensure that each child gains the experiences needed to discover their potential and build toward a productive and fulfilling future.

Admission is as follows: Infant to 12 months: FREE, Children: $12.50, Adult: $12.50, Military and Family Members: $9.50. Pretend City’s Art Studio has new art projects daily! See the Art Calendar for details. Pretend City’s Real Café is located between the Home and Construction Site. Our vending Machines contain healthy choices like sandwiches, salads, fruit snacks, milk, bottle water, and other healthier snack options for your family. Take a break in our Real Cafe seating area while you fill up on much-needed fuel before going back on the floor for more play!  We ask that all eating be in the Real Café seating area, or on the outside tables to side the building (next to the Front Entrance). Pretend City Children’s Museum is a nut-free facility.

Monday, May 4: May the Fourth Be With You – Our city is under threat by the Empire once again! The Rebel alliance have come together and we need to recruit some new young Jedi who must be trained in using the Force. Today you are invited to visit Pretend City to show your Jedi power. You are our only hope. Help us by participating in our fun activities and challenges. Together, we will overcome the Empire.

  • Smart Art: May the shapes be with you today as you use shapes to create Star Wars characters like Yoda and R2D2.
  • Let’s Move: Junior Jedi Academy is calling all brave Jedi Knights! Join us as we train to defeat the Empire. Use your light saber skills to slash your way through the obstacles of the galaxy and battle droids.
  • Simple Science: Hans Solo is encased in carbonite. We need you to help rescue him using some simple science.

RSVP not required. Activities run 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included in museum admission. Come dressed as a Star Wars character for $1.00 off of general admission!

Tuesday, May 5: Cinco De Mayo Fiesta! – Pretend City is dedicated to providing an environment for children to experience new cultures and learn to appreciate diversity. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo is a chance to honor the memory and bravery of the Mexican soldiers who fought for their country. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the culture of Mexico itself. Today’s activities will share just a few common traditions of this Mexican holiday:

  • Smart Art: Amate Art is traditional Mexican folk art that is typically painted on the bark of fig trees. Today your children will be inspired by this art to create their very own.
  • Music & Movement: Mexican Hat Dance will be a great time! Children will get to watch a video of a performance of the traditional hat dance and then participate in their own dance.
  • Symbols In a Second: P is for Pinata will educate children about this Mexican tradition through an interactive video and fun pull-the-pinata activity!

RSVP not required. Activities run 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included in museum admission. Have your child say “hello” in Spanish at the front desk and they’ll receive $1.00 off of general admission!

Friday, May 8: Way to Play, A Package of Learning! – Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth. Play also offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children. Join us for a fun Way To Play Day, which is specially designed to assist parents in finding answers to questions about their child’s development through play.

  • Free ASQ Developmental Check-ups from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.: Specifically for: Children 0 – 5 ½ years old. (first come, first served; limited spaces available)
On Way to Play Days, Pretend City also hosts ASQ Developmental Screenings. The screenings will assess your child’s speech, motor, cognitive and social areas utilizing the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Early diagnosis and treatment of developmental delays can help give a child the best opportunity to reach his/her full potential.

RSVP not required. Activities run 10:00am – 3:00pm and are included in museum admission.

Friday, May 8: Free Dental Screenings – Teaching children about and encouraging healthy oral habits can be a difficult task. Making yourself more knowledgeable will help you work with your little one on a daily basis. Dr. Harvey Lee from Smile Wide Dental is here to help. He will be providing dental education and screenings regarding brushing, flossing, and healthy eating. Event runs 10:00am – 12:00pm. RSVP: Not required; First come, first served; Limited spaces available. Fee: Free; museum admission is neither required nor included. 

Fridays, April 3 – May 8: Kindness Club – Social Skills Program – This 6-week series helps children explore compassion, self-awareness, and self-control. Each class will include a mindfulness exercise and an art or play activity to encourage self-regulation, compassion, and kindness. Children will also practice identifying feelings, effective communication and problem solving as they recognize the benefits that kindness can bring to their lives. Class Days and Dates: Every Friday, April 3rd through May 8th. Time: 12:30 – 1:15p.m. Specifically for:  Children 4-6 (preschool & kindergarten); Parents must remain on the premises. RSVP:  Register here. Registration required. Class Minimum: 5 children; Class Maximum: 15 children. Fee:  $60 for class series (includes 6 classes and museum admission for registered child and one adult on day of the class). $15 walk-in fee (does not include museum admission).

Saturday, May 9: Celebrate Mother’s Day! – What could be a better way to celebrate Mom this year than by taking her to Pretend City’s Mother’s Day party! Various other activities will be set-up throughout the museum for children to spoil their mommies in addition to these fun activities:

  • Smart Art: Pretty Party Hats will help add a bit of fancy fun to our Mother’s Day celebration activities. Stop by the art studio first to make your very own.
  • Café Creations: Tea Time will be a special opportunity for moms and their little ones to bond over a spot of tea. Children will have the opportunity to share what makes their mommy so special.
  • Family Fitness Fun: Mommy & Me Move will get bodies moving with fun fitness routines and exercises that mommies and their child will do together.
  • Sensational Story Time: One of most important gifts a mother can give to their child is a love of reading! Stop by the library today to read special Mother’s Day books with your child.
