Celebrate Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s 10th anniversary with a special Wilderness Access Day in Bommer Canyon. This event will recognize the partnership between the City of Irvine and the Conservancy over the last decade, and visitors will receive a commemorative anniversary pin and Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks keychain. In addition to exploring the many miles of Bommer Canyon trails, the Conservancy will also have a pop-up nature center.

The entire southern Open Space Preserve trail network will be open for self-guided hiking and biking from 8 am to 2 pm. This includes the single-tracks in Shady Canyon and Bommer Canyon that are reserved for guided activities only. Registration is not required for this event. The Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp will be available for parking, but please take note that your vehicle must be removed from the Cattle Camp area by 2 pm. Free event runs 10:00am – 11:00am for all ages. Come explore the newly renovated corral in Bommer Canyon. We’ll walk along the recently built path and discover what life was like on the ranch, when cowboys and cattle roamed the hills, and round-ups occurred in the Cattle Camp. We’ll also see what the present and future hold for this historic site in the open space. Free event runs 9:00am – 10:30am for ages 8 and up. Register online. Led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers in partnership with OC Parks. Join Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist on this 2.5-mile hike with no elevation gain, to explore nature through the lens of a camera. Bring your digital camera and a tripod to capture interesting and unique lighting situations, compositions, textures and colors in the fall season. Share your ideas with other landscape photographers! Please wear sturdy walking/hiking shoes as terrain can be uneven. For ages 12 and up. Join us on this interpretive hike through the beautiful oak woodlands of Limestone Canyon. Our destination will be the strangely eroded rock formation of The Sinks. Along the way we will observe and discuss the native flora and fauna of this protected wilderness area, as well as the habitat restoration efforts currently underway.  (Net elevation gain is 600 feet.) This walk explores the history of the area and is approximately 2 hours. History Tours occur on the third Saturday of each month and have rotating themes. It is a docent led tour that covers approximately 1.5 miles in distance. Walk runs 9:00am – 11:30am. Did you know? Kids are more likely to eat and enjoy these vitamin packed plants when they have grown and harvested them themselves. Join us at the Coastkeeper Garden to learn all about planting delicious fall veggies. Families are invited to visit the Coastkeeper Garden on the third Saturday of each month.  Workshop begins at 10:00am. Families will explore the Garden together while discovering the diversity and importance of plants and nature.  Workshops are designed to spark creativity and learning and offer families a hands-on opportunity to experience the natural world.  Each Family Workshop focuses on a creative theme and features activities, songs, stories and a whole lot of fun! RSVP for our workshops by emailing [email protected] or by visiting the Coastkeeper Calendar page. Workshops are subject to cancellation due to poor weather.

The 2.5 acre Coastkeeper Garden is located at Santiago Canyon College in the City of Orange. This unique, sustainable garden hosts plants from six southern California native habitats as well as drought-tolerant plants. The Master Plan incorporates six California Friendly ® vignettes (garden rooms) into “backyard” landscapes that harmonize with the native plant habitat throughout the Garden. We are open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. (The entrance is on East Santiago Canyon Road between Newport Ave and Jamboree). Free parking available in a dirt lot off E. Santiago Canyon Rd.

The Coastkeeper Natural Play Garden is an area within the Coastkeeper Garden where children can enjoy nature in a controlled setting through fun and exploration. The Natural Play Garden includes:

  • Tree stump paths to navigate
  • A deer grass maze for hiding
  • Willow tree tunnels and paths
  • Rocky hill for climbing and navigating
  • Large tunnel built into a hillside
  • Sitting areas for parents

Come join OC Parks for the official opening of Irvine Ranch Historic Park! Six historic structures were recently fully restored. Learn about the historic significance of these buildings and what a day at the ranch would have been like 100 years ago. The family-friendly day will feature crafts, live music, historic interpretive stations, a petting zoo, photo booth and park tours. Festivities will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This is a free event. Food trucks will be on-site. Parking will be available next door at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 51 Market Place, Irvine. Event runs 10:00am – 2:00pm.

An easy for families of all ages to learn more about Upper Newport Bay and enjoy the trails around it.  The Hike will last approximately one hour-dependent on weather and will be on both paved and dirt trails with some stairs.  No formal program, but we will talk about whatever we discover along the way.  Bring sun protection and water.  We will meet on the patio of the Muth Interpretive Center. Join the Office of Natural Resources at the City of Newport Beach on a moderate 1.3 mile low-tide hike through Newport Beach’s Crystal Cove State Marine Conservation Area.  Be sure to wear close-toed shoes and sunscreen, and be prepared to get a little wet!  Hikes are depended on weather and surf conditions and participants must be 13 years and older.  For any questions, please contact: [email protected]. Family Hike – Autumn is a wonderful time to learn about our local nature. Join a park naturalist on a family hike at Crystal Cove State Park to learn about the plants and animals living in the park on Saturday November 21 & Sunday, November 29 at 9am. Meet at the Berns Amphitheater (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park, follow signs towards the campground.) $15 day-use fee.

Coastal Geology Walk – Crystal Cove State Park is hosting a geology tour along the coastal section of the park on Saturday, November 21 from 1-3pm. Visit several diverse and geologically outstanding sites which all display a story from a different geologic time. Meet at Los Trancos lot at the trailer (PCH turn inland at stoplight “Los Trancos”). Day-use fee: $5/per hour (max. $15).

Enjoy a full moon hike in Black Star Canyon on Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. We will travel at an easy pace, allowing time to enjoy our surrounding sights and sounds. This program is for participants who would enjoy a slower paced hike, are in good health and can walk on uneven surfaces in a wilderness environment. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring water and a red tinted flashlight for the hike. Be ready to enjoy the sounds and smells along with the full moon. Join us as the sun goes down for dinner around the campfire and games in the nature center while parents hit the town, all for less than the cost of a sitter and WAY MORE FUN!
