Want to stand knee-deep in rows of blooming color? Want to refresh your senses while giving back to Nature? Sign up to help behind the scenes at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s one-of-a-kind Native Seed Farm in Irvine!  You will be harvesting seeds from native Spring wildflowers, like California Poppies and Arroyo Lupines. Tools and training will be provided, and no experience is needed.  After a quick ride to the Farm-site in an open-air safari vehicle, you will get introduced to some of our beautiful native plants, and then we’ll get to work! Event runs 9:00am – 12:o0pm for ages 8 and up. Register online. Driving directions emailed upon registration.

You don’t have to wear a kilt to enjoy Scottish Fest but it will get you in the spirit of the festival.  This weekend-long salute to Scotland will present a pipe and drumming contest, sports challenges (like the hammer throw and the caber toss), Highland competition, sheep herding demonstrations, live entertainment and traditional food and drink.

Festival runs Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, 9:00am – 6:00pm. Tickets on sale at the event. See website for details and a schedule of events.

Join Park Rangers and Volunteers for an introductory archery class at the brand new archery range at Mile Square Regional Park. This one hour long class will introduce participants to the basics of the exciting sport or archery. The class is free, parking is $5 per vehicle. Equipment is provided. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Pre-registration is required. To allow us to accommodate as many participants as possible please only sign up for one class per person. Register online.

Held most Saturdays from 9:30am – 12:30pm. It’s a great place to express yourself creatively. Good for children of all ages (must be accompanied by an adult.) Be Djembe Be Happy offers fun, interactive, and community-oriented drum classes for Beginning through Intermediate drummers. Drumming instructor Dee Duncan inspires students through his own joy, enthusiasm, and love of drumming. Dee shares information clearly, breaking it down in a very informal and accessible way, and putting students of all levels at ease. Come in for a fun, high-energy class focusing on the basics of West African hand-drumming. Series recommended as class is progressive. Open to all ages. Class runs 10:o0am – 11:00am. Program is free but a donation of $5-$10 is suggested. Register online.

Join our naturalists on a nature walk and learn about the local plants, animals and history of Irvine Park. Light to moderate walking on both paved paths and trails. Hike runs 10:00am – 11:00am for all ages. Hike is free but parking is $5/vehicle. Meet at the Nature Center near the OC Zoo in parking lot #19.

Beachside Chat – Learn about some of the fun and interesting animals that live at Crystal Cove State Park on Saturdays, 5/9, 5/16, & 5/23 from 11-2pm at the Historic District Education Commons where Ranger Jenn will host a Beachside Chat. Park in the Los Trancos lot (PCH inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk through the tunnel or take the shuttle.) Day-use fee: $5/per hour (max. $15).

ExplorOcean offers families a fun, interactive hands-on experience to connect to the 7 essential principles of ocean literacy through Science Saturdays at ExplorOcean. Quick and engaging activities bring parents and children together as they make predictions, ask questions, problem-solve and think like scientists. Each month we will introduce a new theme based on one of the Ocean Literacy Principles. Science Saturdays are FREE and offered to children of all ages. Join us at noon and prepare to see your world in a whole new way! Program runs 12:00pm – 3:00pm and is ongoing, weather permitting. Registration is not required.

  1. Don’t forget Patchwork Show Spring 2015 is on Sunday, May 24th in Downtown town Santa Ana from 11am-5pm! There are
    over 200 makers, food trucks, artisan food market place, and three stages of local music and performances throughout the day! Flyer is on my FB page.
