Spot native and spring migrating birds with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists on this 2-mile hike over uneven terrain (up to 400-ft. elevation gain) through one of the most diverse plant communities in the United States. Walk runs 8:00am – 11:00am. For ages 12 and up (minors must be accompanied by an adult). Wear hiking or walking shoes and bring your binoculars. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (405 South to 133 south to stoplight at 73 turn-off; make a U-turn, go 1 block; Dilley is on the right). For questions call: 949-497-8324 Mon-Fri & 949-923-2235 Sat/Sun. Join our Park Rangers Sunday mornings for an easy 1-mile hike on the Nature Trail. Hike runs 8:00am – 9:00am. The trail takes visitors through grassland, oak woodland, riparian and sandy cactus scrub communities. Meet at Old Corral Day Use area. Rain will cancel hike.

  • Fee: Free
  • Parking: $5 per vehicle
  • Wear comfortable clothing, hiking shoes.
  • Sunscreen, water and insect repellent are recommended.

Family Nature Hike – Spring is a wonderful time to learn about our local nature. Join a park naturalist on a family hike at Crystal Cove State Park to learn about the plants and animals living in the park on Sunday, May 24 at 9am. Meet at the Berns Amphitheatre (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park follow the signs to the Campground.) $15 day-use fee.

You don’t have to wear a kilt to enjoy Scottish Fest but it will get you in the spirit of the festival.  This weekend-long salute to Scotland will present a pipe and drumming contest, sports challenges (like the hammer throw and the caber toss), Highland competition, sheep herding demonstrations, live entertainment and traditional food and drink.

Festival runs Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, 9:00am – 6:00pm. Tickets on sale at the event. See website for details and a schedule of events.

Back Bay Science Center (BBSC) Community Day

Come explore the buildings and surroundings of the BBSC!   Event occurs every Sunday and runs 10:00am – 2:00pm. Talk to the City of Newport Beach staff and volunteers about ongoing research, education, & restoration projects. Get your fingers wet in our tide pool touch tank, tour the teaching lab and aquarium tanks, and do some bird watching. The Science Center is located just off of Back Bay Drive on Shellmaker Island (600 Shellmaker Rd). This program is free and no reservations are required.

Every week, rain or shine, the Great Park Certified Farmers Market features fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, handcrafted artisan products, live music and entertainment, and a selection of gourmet food trucks. Join us in our library for Storytime with Cynthia Callard on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month! For each storytime, a story will be chosen and read aloud for all to enjoy.  We encourage you to bring friends and family members of all ages. All of the stories that are read have a wonderful message of love and compassion fitting for all ages. On this day we will be reading Sunflower House by Eve Bunting. Storytime runs 1:30pm – 2:00pm. Program is free but a donation of $2-$5 is suggested. Register online.

Discounted Late Nights at Aquarium of the Pacific

Enjoy the Aquarium of the Pacific with special extended hours.

The entire Aquarium will be open, except Lorikeet Forest. Admission after 5:00 p.m. is just $14.95 for adults and seniors, and children (3-11). Watch the nighttime activities of our animals, touch a shark, and enjoy the beautiful evening lighting of the Aquarium’s architecture. Hours are 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Please note that Café Scuba may not be open on all nights but the Coffee Cart will be open in those cases.

  1. Don’t forget Patchwork Show Spring 2015 is on Sunday, May 24th in Downtown town Santa Ana from 11am-5pm! There are
    over 200 makers, food trucks, artisan food market place, and three stages of local music and performances throughout the day! Flyer is on my FB page.
