Join professional angler Bill Varner for a surf fishing clinic at Crystal Cove State Park. Activity runs 6:30am – 9am. Minimum age is 8. Reservations are required. Please contact [email protected] to make a reservation. Meet at the Reef Point lot (PCH coastward Reef Point stoplight, left at the kiosk to the end). Bring your own rod and reel. Bait will be supplied. $15 parking fee.

Spring is in the air! Join us for a fun-filled day exploring life in the garden with bugs, blooms and butterflies! Explore educational stations, informative exhibits and live arthropod friends. Program runs 10am – 2pm. Just for Kids – face painting, crafts and a buggy coloring mural. Special guests include: Dr. Sue the Bug Lady, Mimi the Monarch Butterfly and Lenny & Squiggy the hissing cockroaches. This program is FREE! No reservations required.

Take a walk through the renovated 12-acre Historic District at Crystal Cove State Park. Learn about the colorful past of the Cove and hear about the different uses for each cottage. Tour runs 10am – 12pm. Minimum age is 8. Park at the Los Trancos parking lot, then cross at the intersection and walk across the marked pathways towards the historic district to the first cottage #34 on top of the hill. There is a $15 day-use parking fee.

Mother’s Day is a special occasion to honor mothers everywhere, to shower them with love, care, and warmth. On this Mother’s Day eve, Pretend City brings you splendid celebration activities for mommies and children. Spend the day together sharing special moments, bonding, and creating wonderful memories. Activities for the day include:

• Art Studio Smart Art Activity: Mommy & Me Puppets – Here’s your chance to get creative! Mommies use this time to have some fun too. These personalized puppets will be great tool to utilize when working on your child’s social and emotional skills through play.
• Sensational Story Time: The Night Before Mother’s Day – This sweet story is a fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Join in all of the antics as you create your very own take-home Mommy and Me Grab Bag full of supplies to make your Mother’s Day the best!
• Growing Up Great: Mommy & Me Yoga- Mommies, take some time to relax with your child during this Mommy & Me yoga session. Doing yoga together enhances your little one’s cognitive development, improves their social skills, and is just plain fun!

The Celebration runs 10am – 3pm and is included in General Admission (Adults and Children 1 year and above $12.50, Infant to 12 months free).

In conjunction with the Orange County Department of Education, the Library will be hosting the 2014 Young Authors’ Faire on Saturday, May 10 from 11 am to 3 pm. This celebration of the writing efforts of K-12 students in Orange County Schools will feature performers, authors, games, prizes and more. This event runs 11am – 3pm and is free of charge.

Join our Naturalists on a nature walk and learn about Trabuco Canyon animals and nature. Light to moderate walk on mostly paved roads. Meet at the Nature Center just inside the main entrance of the park. Hike is 9am-10:30am. All ages welcome. Hike is free but parking is $5. Event is conditional on weather.

Join OC Parks’ trained staff on an easy 1.1-mile hike to the park’s Coastal Redwood grove. You will use your 5 senses to engage with nature as you stroll to the Redwoods. You will also have an opportunity to learn about our native plants along the way. The hike begins at the park’s Nature Center located at east end of the park and runs 9:30am – 11am. The new music festival will present a full day of free live music from around the globe from 12 to 6pm. Three bands will take center stage at Mile Square Regional Park throughout the day, with each performance providing a unique and exciting musical experience! BLEU Band will headline the event, featuring an assortment of hit Vietnamese recording artists (Linda Trang Dai, Tommy Ngo, Lillian and many more). Preceding that, Mexican Mother’s Day will be celebrated with the Latin sensation Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez performing live. The event kicks off with favorite tunes from the 1980s with local tribute band Flashback Heart Attack. Artists: Flashback Heart Attack (12:30 p.m.), Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez (2 p.m.), BLEU Band (3:30 p.m.)

Live music will take place near the Forest Shelter in the park, close to the Euclid Street entrance. The event admission and parking are free. Food will be available for purchase. Join OC Parks to experience a world of music in the great outdoors at the family-friendly Global Sounds Festival.

Looking for something to do with the family? Enjoy an early evening family hike on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Hike runs 6pm – 8pm and the minimum age is 12. We will hike along a flat trail and cross a creek as we watch for red-tailed hawks and mule deer. The hike will average 2-3 miles round trip at an easy pace with a medium level of interpretation. This program is for participants who would enjoy a slower-paced and level hike. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring water for the hike. Be ready to enjoy the sounds and smells of early evening. Registration for this free event is required.
