Exploring our own backyard and Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary

My husband and I have always loved taking drives and exploring areas near and not so near us. With gas now so expensive, we are not driving as far or as often. We explore the wonderful canyons we have right in our backyard. We frequent Santiago, Silverado, Modjeska, and Black Star Canyons. There are so many hikes, trails and hidden gems in the canyon. It is the perfect way to expose your kids to nature, wildlife and the beauty just outside of our concrete jungle.

Today we took the boys our to Modjeska Canyon and went to the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary in the beautiful Modjeska Canyon. The facility offers visitors, students and tourists a rural natural setting less than 10 miles from the hustle and bustle of Orange County.

There is a Natural Science Center which offers wonderful educational exhibits on the wildlife, plant life and history of the canyon, also included is an educational area for children, and a lovely little gift shop.

The sanctuary attracts bird watchers of every skill level. Thankfully there weren’t many bird watchers there today, because my children were incredibly loud and I’m sure scared every wild animal in the canyon!

There is a excellent bird porch to sit and watch a wide variety of types of birds. The sanctuary serves as a resource center and an outdoor educational center. The center also includes wonderful nature trails and an 80 seat amphitheater.

Along the trail there are desert turtles, and a beautiful koi pond You will also find an outdoor nursery if you want to purchase plants native to the area.

It is not crowded, the staff is mostly volunteers and students from Cal State Fullerton, they run on donations. We always put a few bucks in the can by the gate, because it is such a favorite of ours.

If you are a looking to teach your kids a little about nature, the wilderness without the trouble of going camping. Tuckers Wildlife Sanctuary is the perfect place to spend a few hours, right in our backyard.

Tuckers Wildlife Sanctuary is open Tuesday – Sunday 9am – 4pm. It is located at 29322 Modjeska Canyon Rd, Modjeska Canyon, CA 92676.
