Exposing Children to Musical Theatre with The Phantom of the Opera
We attended as a guest of the SCFTA
The highly acclaimed production of The Phantom of the Opera has recently opened at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts taking musical theatre to new heights. Exposing our children to the arts is very important to us as parents. We have brought our children to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts since they were young children, they have developed a true passion for theatre, especially musical theatre.
My older son who has been working hard on developing his portfolio to apply at the Orange County School of the Arts for Culinary Arts and Production and Design couldn’t wait for The Phantom of the Opera to open in Orange County. The minute that he learned that the show was coming to Orange County, we planned a Mother and Son evening at the theatre.
We started our evening with dinner at Leatherby’s Cafe Rouge where savored the incredible creations made by Executive Chef Ross Pangilinan. For every Broadway series production at the Segerstrom, Chef Ross creates a unique menu themed after the production for guests to enjoy before going to see a show.

For a child with a strong passion for Production and Design (P&D), this performance was a dream come true for my son. From the crashing chandelier to the lighting, he was in awe throughout the entire production. He couldn’t sit still throughout the production and continued to whisper into my ear, “how did they do that?”

It wasn’t just the lighting and special effects that captivated my son but also the music. Many of us already know the classic songs from The Phantom of the Opera. Hearing the songs while watching the story unfold before my eyes, made it feel like I was hearing the songs for the first time.
While many people use theatre tickets for date nights or a chance to go out with their girlfriends, taking your children to the theatre is one of the most enriching experiences a parent can give their child. My children have been going to the theatre since they were just toddlers, and it has made a long-lasting impact on who they are today.
It is a wonderful production to expose your children to musical theatre for the first time. Your children will never forget the first time that they see The Phantom of the Opera, and what better memory to have then to say they saw it with their Mom or Dad.
