Falling in Love with the 2016 Toyota Prius

2016 Prius

After driving the 2016 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel of the all-new redesigned 2016 Toyota Prius. When the car was first delivered to my driveway, I fell in love with its sleek new body style, and the blue crush metallic color. Once I got behind the wheel of the Prius, I felt like I was driving on air.

Taking the 2016 Prius to Carmel

We drove the car for one week on a road trip from Orange County to Carmel. I wanted to see how the car’s mpg would perform, and it far exceeded my expectations. First, Carmel was a lot further of a drive from Orange County than I anticipated and took almost 10 hours to get there with traffic and stops for snacks along the way. I was able to make it all the way to Carmel, and still have a 1/4 of a tank of gas in the car. If I had attempted to make that drive in my full-size SUV, it would have taken 1.5-2 tanks of gas, costing $200+ in gas. When it did come time to fill-up the gas tank on the Prius, it cost less than $30! That is a significant saving for families looking for a car that will cut their gas budget. The car sticker mentioned that it gets 56 combined mpg with 58 mpg in the city/ 53 mpg on the highway, but the car performed better.

Road Trip with the 2016 Prius

The car featured a Hybrid Synergy drive system, 1.8L DOHC 16v VVT-i 4-cylinder engine with EV/ECO/Power car. I am used to driving a V8 vehicle, and I didn’t notice a difference in the engine performance. The Prius engine is quiet, smooth, and boosted an enormous amount of power.

PCH and the 2016 Prius

With us being a family of five, I am always concerned about space when driving a compact vehicle, especially now that two of my children are teenagers. The car offered our family more than enough room, especially in the trunk. I was able to fit three suitcases along with additional bags/blankets that the kids needed for our weeklong road trip. The trunk had a privacy shade to keep our luggage shielded from the sun and the public. The second most important thing to our teenagers is the outlets. Our teenagers always want to be able to have all their devices charged so they can stay connected with their friends while away from home. The Prius featured two 12V power outlets, Bluetooth so our kids would stream their music from their phones, and six speakers that created surround sound music effect.

Exploring with the 2016 Prius

The smart-flow climate control system kept our family cool while on our road trip, and the cruise control made driving long distances a breeze. When we didn’t have the air conditioning on, we had the windows rolled down to feel the wind in our hair while basking in the beautiful ocean views along Pacific Coast Highway.

When it comes to safety, Toyota designs the safest cars available on the road. While the Prius is smaller than most cars on the road, families can be at ease in knowing that their family is in a safe vehicle. It features vehicle stability control, traction control, ABS, brake assist, and smart stop technology. In the event of an accident, the car creates a pillow effect with front/passenger advanced airbag system, driver/passenger front seat-mounted side curtain, driver knee, and passenger seat airbags. For families with children who are still in car seats, the car has LATCH lower anchors and tethers for added car seat safety.

The car was one of the best that we have taken on a road trip, and it is now my #1 choice in a vehicle to purchase for my teenage son next year. When looking for a compact vehicle or thinking about downsizing your mid-size vehicle, the 2016 Toyota Prius is the best choice available. The sticker price of the car that we test drove was $25,535.00. Find your closest Toyota dealer online.
