Five Things Kids Will Learn from Strange Magic

We attended a screening of the film

Strange Magic Learning

The film “Strange Magic” is out in theaters today and is much more than a movie. It is a film about life and love while packed full of multiple great messages that kids can benefit from while watching. When I watched the film, I fell in love with the music, the visual effects, the characters, and all the positive messages. These are five things that I feel your kids will take away from the film.

While it may seem obvious by the title that kids will learn about love in the film, it is much more than that. When talking with George Lucas about making the film, it was important that he got the message across of the difference between infatuation and true love. In the movie, the characters experience infatuation and also the heartbreak that comes from it.

As a parent, there is nothing harder to watch than my kids getting frustrated while trying to follow their dreams. While it is easy to just give-up and walk away, my favorite character in the film, Sunny, never gives up. Sunny faces so many stumbling blocks, and yet continues to have a positive attitude without ever giving up.

Risk Taking
Risks are good and bad. When our kids took their first steps..that was a risk. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve noticed that they are more fearful of taking risks in life. It’s easy to stay in our comfort zone and not take a risk but if our kids want to continue to grow it comes with some risk taking. The character Marianne was afraid to take the risk of opening her heart to love again…but you’ll have to watch the movie to see if she does.

We live in a society where people are quick to make judgments. How a person looks, smells or even how they are dressed. I’ll be honest that I’ve looked at a person and didn’t think I would like them and then they’ve ended up becoming one of my best friends. The film speaks a lot about looking past the way a person looks and get to know the person on the inside. You know that old saying, “It’s the inside that really counts,” and it’s true.

Kids can be mean. Adults can be mean. There needs to be more kindness in our world. In the film, a lot of the characters learn that they don’t get anywhere from being mean…but a whole new world full of possibilities open from being kind to others. Also, that it’s never too late to make a change. In the film, The Bog King is angry and mad but once he found kindness in his heart life changed for him.
