Free Core Yoga Workout Builds Community

Library Assistant, Rylee Gagne, created the Body Sculpt Class offered Wednesdays at 10:30 AM and every other Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Library of the Canyons because she wanted to diversify adult programming while building community.

“I want to make fitness less intimidating,” Rylee said. “I’m hoping people will have fun doing core yoga with their friends and neighbors.”

Judging from the class this past Wednesday, I think Rylee achieved her goals. We started out walking a few laps outside of the library to warm up our muscles. While enjoying the view of Santa Ana hills displaying their brightest Spring greens and flowers, I had a chance to get to know Karen, a lovely neighbor living in Modjeska I had never met before.

After we moved back inside, Rylee led us in a series of yoga poses to increase flexibility and strength. She came by and offered alignment adjustment suggestions. As the soundtrack became more upbeat, so did the cardio element of the class. Karen and I cheered each other on as I huffed and puffed a bit more. All along, Rylee gave modifications for exercises. I took quite a few of them which kept me from aggravating my scoliosis. The class ended with a pleasant cool down and final relaxation pose. Rylee gave a quick, gentle neck massage to participants who wanted it. I left feeling more fit, refreshed and supported by my instructor and fellow participants.

When she is not at the library, Rylee teaches at Core Power Yoga where she received 200 hours of yoga training and an additional 50 hours in yoga sculpt training. Moms can bring their kids to play with library toys while they do class as long as they keep an eye on them. Participants must sign waiver.

The next Saturday class is this Saturday, April 6th at 10 AM and then every other Saturday from then on. You may want to check the online Library of Canyons calendar http://www.ocpl.org/libloc/library_of_the_canyons in future for any changes to the schedule or library closures.
