Frozen Bananas and Balboa Bar at Dad’s Donuts
When the weather starts to get warm, our favorite thing to do is head down to Balboa Island for a famous frozen banana or Balboa bar at Dad’s Donuts. I’ve been getting a frozen banana from Dad’s since I was a little kid, and now I get to share this special tradition with my children.
It’s not just the frozen bananas and Balboa bars that make Dad’s so popular, but also their famous hippo cookies. These cookies have been an icon of Balboa Island for many years, and a favorite to all locals. I don’t know what they put into these cookies, but the minute that you sink your taste buds into them, it feels like childhood again.
On hot days, like we have been having recently, there is usually a good sized line to get a refreshing sweet treat. Your kids get to go right up to the window and select their favorite toppings to go on their frozen banana or Balboa bar. Then there are numerous benches along Marine Way where you can eat your ice cream together while soaking up the warm summer rays and feel the fresh ocean breezes.
Once you’re done having a Balboa bar or frozen banana, you can walk along Maine Way and go into the numerous shops or walk across the street to learn about the history of Balboa Island at the Balboa Island Museum.
Bring your bikes down to the island, and make it a day full of fun. Dad’s Donuts is located right in the heart of Balboa Island at 318 Marine Ave, Newport Beach, CA 92662.
