Get Creative at the Orange County Museum of Art’s Second Sunday (psst…it’s FREE!)
Our family was invited as guests of the Orange County Museum of Art to experience art in an interactive, family-friendly environment. A new theme is selected each month to provide a unique experience every time you go and the best part is it’s FREE!

My family and I attended the Valentine’s Day event featuring art from the California Landscape into Abstraction collection. Before we toured the museum, we decided to check out the various craft projects set up on the patio. There were several crafts to choose from and each one was based on the style of various artists. For example, you can make a Picasso inspired valentine, using cubism techniques. It is a great way to have fun and educate your children about the world of fine art. My boys enjoyed working with clay the most. They made a heart of clay and decorated it with a collage of natural materials. They had so much fun, they went on to sculpture. Godzilla was the subject. No surprise there. While crafting, we enjoyed live concerts performed by various schools within the Newport Mesa School District. Stories were being read to the younger children in the lobby and all this was before we even explored the museum itself.

Once we dragged the boys from their sculpting, we joined the family museum tour geared toward children. Three art displays were chosen and the children were asked what they saw, how it made them feel, and what they thought about what they saw. They were asked how the art displays were different and they were invited to create an abstract piece of art using construction paper of varying colors and shapes on the floor. Even the smallest of children eagerly participated.

When we finished the tour and finally got around to exploring the museum, we left to find several families sprawled out on the lawns enjoying a picnic lunch. Some families brought a picnic lunch while others ordered off the gourmet food truck the museum staff arranged.

All in all, it was a great outing. First, it didn’t cost anything. Second, my kids got an educational lesson in art, disguised as fun. It is a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon with those we love the most! Oh and don’t forget to get a picture under the Peeing Dog.

Terri Garcia has been a Southern California girl since the age of two. She has lived in Los Angeles County and both North and South Orange County. A stay-at-home mom and confessed “pinaholic”, she loves all things creative. She believes in giving back and practicing random acts of kindness. She finds joy in creating thoughtful, creative gifts, traveling, historical fiction and most importantly being mom to two very active boys. Similar to the Little Red Hen, she likes to do things herself; although in the end, she will happily share the homemade bread with family and friends.
