The new Broadway and West End show, Ghost the Musical, came to Segerstrom Center for the Arts (SCFTA) this week. Based on the Academy Award winning movie, the show has been seen by more than one million people worldwide and has been nominated for numerous awards, including five Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards.  GHOST – THE MUSICAL does not disappoint audiences with it’s classic love-story plot, but the truly unique part of the show are the special effects never before seen in an onstage musical.

Based in modern-day New York City, two lovebirds, Sam (Steven Grant Douglas) and Molly (Katie Postotnik), portray just how much the supernatural power of love is capable of. When Sam meets an untimely death by a mugger on a dark city street, his love for Molly, who now is in danger herself, traps him as a ghost between this world and the next. Sam’s mission, assisted by a phony storefront psychic, Oda Mae (Carla R. Stewart), is to protect Molly, and in doing so he illustrates his undying love for her.

Illusions, created by lighting and special effects, lend to the supernatural storyline and give audiences a show unlike many others. Behind the scenes lighting and special effects displays featuring gobs, color gels and more are set up for patrons’ enjoyment and education in the lobby.

The signature Segerstrom photo op is available for this show, like so many others, by way of the classic pottery wheel scene made famous by the 1990s film, and also portrayed in the musical.

I personally have been to several Segerstrom productions, and they are never to disappoint.  Perfect for a date night, family affair, or girls night out, the Segerstrom shows delivery quality unparalleled by many theaters, and best of all it’s right in our own Orange County backyard! Because of it’s proximity to so many great restaurants, dinner and a show make the perfect night out on the town.  My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our date night (of which we’re trying to pack many in before baby number three arrives!)
