The Great Park Welcomes Alegria Farms

10-02-2013_03

Alegria Farms has been my favorite little farm in the heart of Laguna Canyon for many years. I have enjoyed spending numerous days talking with the owners about hydroponics, and have used many of their tips to be successful in my own backyard gardening. We are so happy for Alegria Farms at their continued success of being welcomed into the Orange County Great Park this year.

Alegria Farms is now part of a 1/2 acre solar-powered demonstration center on the parks’ VALOR Field. Orange County Produce is working with Alegria Farms to support more than 30,000 plants utilizing hydroponic gardening. The technology they are developing are teaching local farmers how to supply communities with fresh local produce while reducing transportation and preserving natural resources.

What is hydroponic gardening? It is something that I have been wanting to try in my backyard garden for many years. The farming is soilless using coconut fiber instead of soil. This helps to prevent soil-borne pathogens such as E. Coli, Listeria and Salmonella.

Families can enjoy getting fresh local produce delivered from Alegria Farms with their local produce delivery service. The vegetables are picked and delivered to your door fresh within 24 hours. The boxes are $40 each, and delivery is available in Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo, Newport Beach, Laguna Niguel and Dana Point. Boxes can be ordered by calling 949-294-3554.
