Guide to Fishing at Laguna Niguel Lake

Have your kids ever dreaming of fishing? It is officially trout season, and the Laguna Niguel Lake is filled to the rim with big bountiful trout for your kids to try catching. I have tried fishing once with the kids by myself without any luck, so this time we planned an afternoon for the boys to bond with their grandpa while fishing.

We are so lucky to have so many great fishing destinations right here in Orange County, and the Laguna Niguel Lake is one of my favorite places for families to spend the day fishing together. What we didn’t expect was that the boys would come home with one of their biggest catches ever totaling 11 trout!

Where is it located?
The Laguna Niguel Lake is located right inside of the Laguna Niguel Regional Park. There is a $3 entrance to get into the park, and once inside, your family can fish at the lake, ride bikes, play at the park, and more.

  • $28.00 adults
  • $25.00 seniors (Monday only)
  • $20.00 active military (with ID)
  • $18.00 children (ages 4-11)

Boat Rentals
The best way for your family to catch the biggest amount of fish is by renting a boat. You’ll have more success fishing from the middle of the lake vs. on the shore. The boat rentals are $10 per hour, $30 for 5 hours, and $50 for 6am to 4pm. The kids will also have a fun time riding around the lake on the boat.

Pole Rentals
If you don’t have your own gear then no problem. They have everything that you need to go fishing on the lake including pole rentals, bait and fishing nets. The rental fees are:

  • Pole Rentals $10 each
  • Fishing Net Rentals $10

They are open 7 days a week (rain or shine). Summer (April-October) 8am to 8pm. Winter (November-Mid April) 6am to 5pm.

Fishing License Required?
No California State Fishing License are required to fish at this lake.

What to bring
I recommend bringing a cooler with ice to bring home your fish. You will also want to bring a sharp knife to help de-head and gut and fish you catch at their cleaning station (better than doing it at home). You’ll probably be here for at least 4 hours, so bring snacks or anything else your kids will need to stay hydrated and fueled to keep enjoying the fun. The kids feet can get wet in the boat so send them in boots with hats and jackets (it can get cold on the lake too.)

And yes, if you are opting for that extraordinary nighttime fishing experience, that night vision gear is the one most important thing to carry. has more information about types of equipment needed for night fishing.

When are they stocking the lake?
