Guide to Goff Cove Beach in Laguna Beach

My friend Karen and I have raised our kids along the calm shores of Goff Cove Beach in Laguna Beach. There was one summer that we spent everyday at this beach. We officially called this the true “baby beach” in Orange County because of it’s calm waves that are hardly ever over 6 inches tall. Why did we love raising our kids on this beach the most? It is a small cove beach that on a weekday hardly has more than 10-15 families (with a lifeguard). Did I mention that it is the only beach along the coast that has *never* had an attempted drowning either? Yet another plus for Mother’s feeling safe bringing their kids to this beach without bringing another parent or guardian to help.

Once the beach of a trailer park on the cliffs along PCH, when the Montage was built, the beach has quickly grown in popularity. When most families come to the beach in front of the Montage, they usually stop at the main beach, Treasure Island. Just a few short steps further along the pathway is our favorite, Goff Cove Beach.

There is a shower and drinking fountain at the top of the stairs that lead down to this intimate cove. Find yourself, a spot close to the water, and enjoy the calm waves for your younger children to frolic.

Parking Parking is always a challenge at this location because of the resort. There is random metered parking along PCH and in the underground parking structure off Wesley and PCH. (Insider tip – there is free parking at the top of Wesley Street in the neighborhood across the street, although you will be in for a walk.)

What to bring Bring floats, boogie boards, sand toys and snorkel gear. (There is some great snorkeling available in these crystal clear waters.)

Tide Pools When the tides are low, children can explore the tide pools to the far right of the beach. Bring along some water shoes for the kids, because the rocks on these tide pools are extremely sharp for young feet.

Bathrooms There are super nice bathrooms at the top of the stairs next to the blue mural at the Montage. These bathrooms are open to the public, but maintained by the resort, so they are always in pristine condition.

Insider tip Since this beach is a small cove, check the tide reports before coming. If there is a storm, or tides are high, sometimes the beach can be closed.

  1. Great guide, Shelby. Thanks for sharing this. We want to take advantage of the back to school season so the beaches should be a lot less crowded now. This helps a lot.

    • Sure. We have guides to every beach in OC – just click on the beaches tab & pick a city/beach. Have fun!
