I love being a “blonde.” And for 20 years, I’ve been “weaving” color along with my own natural hair strands every six to eight weeks.

Over the past year, though, rather than feeling like I just stepped out of a salon, I noticed thinning hair, tenderness and painful sores on my scalp. I tried changing hair care treatments and products and consulting with various doctors, but the symptoms persisted.

Growing more desperate, I conducted my own research and decided to try an alternative: natural, non-toxic hair coloring treatment. Does that even exist?

The answer: YES!

I uncovered a new salon that offers more natural options for hair and cosmetics: ROOTS. The salon is the brainchild of Laguna Beach local Laura Linsenmayer.

Linsenmayer, with more than 16 years of experience in the beauty industry, recognized the overwhelming need for more healthy beauty alternatives for men and women. “Spending time at ROOTS is more of an educational beauty experience. We feel much like doctors and nurses of beauty,” said Linsenmayer.

Behind the beauty, though, is the real concern about the linkage between cancer and beauty products. “The growing cancer and illness rates don’t lie,” exclaims Linsenmayer.

The National Toxicology Program has not classified exposure to hair dyes as to its potential to cause cancer. However, it has classified some chemicals that are, or were used in hair dyes, such as 4-chloro-o-phenylenediamine, as “reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.”

And, since dyes come in close contact with the skin, they can also produce allergic reactions, skin irritations and in some cases cause hair loss, warned professionals from Hair and Skin Clinic that is specialized in PRP hair treatments.

Armed with this information, I took a leap of faith, and treated my hair with a non-toxic, more natural hair coloring alternative at ROOTS several weeks ago. Surprisingly, not only did I love my hair, I had no tenderness, no sores – and over time – I am hopeful the hair loss improves as well.

In addition to switching hair coloring treatment, I also checked the ingredients in all of my hair care products. I realized that a primary ingredient, Sodium Laureth Sulfate can be irritating and even disrupt hair growth. As part of Linsenmayer’s educational mantra, she provides clients with a “Dirty Dozen” list, which cites the top 12 harmful ingredients found in most cosmetics.

“We do not want to encourage panic or fear when discussing and educating clients on non-toxic cosmetic alternatives. What’s most important is that we convey what a positive movement this is and help instill good old fashioned common sense,” said Linsenmayer.

So, I am optimistic that I’m finally addressing the root of my hair and skin issues, while helping to live a healthier, happier life. After all, blondes do have more fun.
