Helpful Tips for Protecting Your Pet while Vacationing This Summer

Out of all the seasons, summer seems to be everyone’s favorite one, including pets. The idea of taking late-night walks while enjoying the summer breeze and spending the days out by the beach are just some of the things that make this time of the year more enjoyable.

Pet Owner Tips

However, in order for you and your furry friend to have the best experience ever, you must prepare well especially if you are thinking about vacationing together. This is because the high temperatures and long travels can really take their toll on your pet, so it is best that you take precautionary actions for them to be safe and happy on the trip.

Here is a brief list of them that you should follow.

Safety first

It is well known that pets are curious animals that like to roam and sniff around anywhere they can. However, their constant snooping can sometimes get them in trouble and they may easily end up injuring themselves. That’s why their safety should be your number one priority.

Obtaining pet insurance is an excellent way to protect them. If you haven’t done this by now, make sure you educate yourself first on what pet insurance is and what are its benefits so you will find the insurance plan that best fits your pet’s needs. In fact, getting the right coverage can buy you peace of mind and protect your wallet at the same time.

Keep their paws cool

Just like your feet, your doggie’s paws for example can also get really hot in summer. Not only will this cause discomfort for them, but it will also increase their body temperature and lead to overheating.

So, to avoid this, make sure you spray your pet’s paws and stomach with some water. Some pet parents even lay a wet towel on the bottom of their furry baby instead of on the top of their coat to keep them feeling cool.

If you want, you can look into buying a kiddie pool for your pet and allow them to jump in and freshen up whenever they want to.

Look for a shade

Finding the perfect shade can also help keep your pet cool at all times. Whether it is under your sunbed or the umbrella or simply by your tent, make sure you create a shade that will be cool enough for them.

For example, if you are taking your dog to the beach, you can give them a free pass on digging holes. For dogs, this is a method they use to avoid heat because the sand is rather cool underneath. If you see they are struggling with their little paws, give them a hand and find the best shaded area.

Never leave them in the car

Due to the high temperatures in summer, cars can easily become a hotbox even if you leave the window open a crack. That’s why you should never leave your pets in the car because that may increase their temperature and even lead to developing heat stroke.

So, if you’ve been driving for a while and need a toilet break, take it in turns and always have somebody stay with your pet while you freshen up.

Or, if you are going somewhere that isn’t pet-friendly, then leave your companion at home in order to avoid putting them in danger of overheating.

Keep them hydrated

Keeping your pet hydrated at all times is probably the most important thing you need to remember when you are summer vacationing together. Whether you are spending the whole day at the beach or you are going hiking, you should always make fresh, cold water available and accessible to them.

For example, if you are out and about, you can bring a portable, collapsible water bowl or a squirt bottle and fill them up with enough cool water to last the whole time you are gone. Give them small amounts of water every 15 minutes to avoid excessive panting and overheating.

Final thoughts

Going on a summer vacation with your furry companion is an exciting time both for you and your pet. However, due to the high temperatures and long car journeys, you must be a responsible pet parent and always keep them safe, fresh and happy on your trip.

From regularly hydrating them to keeping their paws cool, there are several things you need to have in mind in order to provide your furry friend with the best summer experience ever.
