Hilarious New Television Comedy 9JKL

This post was sponsored by the Role Mommy Writer’s Network. However all opinions are 100% my own.

There is so much darkness in the world in which we are living. It is refreshing for all of us to escape it for awhile while enjoying a hilarious comedy. Unfortunately, most television shows that are currently airing are dramas, and it is was refreshing to learn about a hilarious new comedy on CBS called 9JKL.

When I was invited for a set visit at CBS, I had no idea what the show was about. I had heard some buzz surrounding it and knew that it was a comedy, but I waited until visiting the set to learn more about the series.

As I entered the soundstage, I got to watch Linda Lavin create magic on the screen while filming an upcoming episode. It was such an honor to watch such an iconic actress perform for us live on the set of 9JKL.

Once they were done with the filming, we got an opportunity to watch one of the recent episodes. I can’t remember the last time that I laughed as much as I did when watching the show. It is clearly one of the best comedies currently on the air.

Then it was time to sit down with the cast and talk about what it is like filming such a funny series. Mark Feuerstein who is the co-creator and producer of the show introduced the cast to all of us, and everyone cheered as the legends Linda Lavin and Elliott Gould entered the room.

The series is loosely based on the Mark Feuerstein life stories. He shared with us that when making the pilot, there were several things that did happen to him as a kid like when his father tried to shove a melon down the throat of a girl he was dating and when he also wanted him to make a viral video for his estate planning business. Not all of the episodes are based on Feuerstein’s life and is written by a brilliant team of writers, including his wife.

Feuerstein shared with us that he had his father in a scene as an ice cream man in Royal Pains and that he enjoyed it so much that he made a debut in a recent episode as Fred Burnstein and his mom was played by Marsha Burstein. “It is so much fun. Things that are true to life in the most imaginative ways,” said Feuerstein.

After talking with Feuerstein about how much of his life has impacted the stories in 9JKL, the attention went to Linda Lavin to see how much of the role she plays is relatable to her life. “Memories come up when you are working on a character that you had buried. The unconscious becomes very alive when you are in rehearsal. When you are creating and collaborating with other people and the stories that you all share with each other help to create a situation in which the imagination takes over as well. Everything doesn’t come from life for an actor; we aren’t queen victoria when we play her. When we play a character we bring ourselves into it, and not everything is supplied by history and memory. Not everything I play in Judy has happened to me nor is she someone I know but my imagination kicks in and the writing is so good, the writing gives us the blueprint for the behavior of the character,” said Lavin.

Then the cast all shared some of their favorite memories making the series together and then welcomed us to the stage to take some pictures with them and of the set of 9JKL. It was so neat to see all the details that go into the creation of the set of the series right down to the post-it notes on the refrigerator that Feuerstein said are in fact in his parent’s kitchen. He shared with us that his parents have post-it notes all over their kitchen that they use as a telephone book system.

After visiting the set of 9JKL, I started watching the series with my husband, and it is now one of our all-time favorite comedies. If you are looking for a new series to start watching with your husband, I highly recommend 9JKL that is on CBS on Monday evenings.
