Homemade Peppermint Bark Recipe

PeppermintBark

The holidays are a fun time to bake treats with your kids but sometimes it can be difficult to find a recipe that kids of all ages can help make. My kids have been helping me make homemade peppermint bark during the holidays since they were just toddlers, and it is one of their favorite holiday treats. Before purchasing commercial store-bought peppermint bark for a holiday gift, make it at home instead. You’ll have a blast bonding with your children, and a homemade gift is extra special to receive during the holiday season.

peppermint bark 1

What do you need? It is simple!

1 box of candy canes
2 12oz. bags of white chocolate chips
1 tea. peppermint extract
1 gallon-size ziploc bag
1 sheet wax paper
1 cookie sheet

Where do you start? Bring your kids into the kitchen, and get ready for some fun!

1. You can either do this with your kids or set them in the backyard to work on it. It can often keep the kids occupied for a long time unwrapping the candy canes giving mom a chance to vacuum or fold a load of laundry. You’ll want to unwrap 5-6 candy canes.

2. Then put the candy canes in a gallon-size ziploc bag.

3. Seal the bag, and then have the children use their fists to crush the candy canes on the outdoor cement (this is where your toddlers will have a blast!!)

4. Once the candy canes are crushed into small pieces it is time to melt the chocolate.

5. In a microwave safe bowl melt the white chocolate in the microwave. It will take 5-6 minutes but you’ll want to stop every 30 seconds to stir the chocolate to prevent “cooking” the chocolate vs. melting.

6. Once the chocolate is melted, add the peppermint extract and candy cane crumbles. Mix well.

7. Spread over wax paper on a cookie sheet.

8. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

9. Break up the bark, and put in cute holiday gift packages.
