How To Train Your Dragon LIVE Backstage!

If you’ve seen the DreamWorks movie, “How To Train Your Dragon”, then you may have heard of How To Train Your Dragon Live – a spectacular live action show with 13 dragons that stomp, roar, breathe fire and smoke, and even fly around the arena. Today I had the opportunity to go backstage at the Honda Center and meet a few of the dragons up close and personal.

“Toothless” is one of the many dynamic dragons in the show. He was quite gentle, almost playful when we met him, and my son was very intrigued by his presence. Apparently the dragons like to be scratched under their chins so Astrid, one of the cast members took him up to greet him.

The special effects within these dragons is utterly amazing. These complex creatures have the ability to move their eyes and change their facial expressions. “Toothless” was even able to lift his feet off the stage. They produce realistic noises and even interact with each other.

“Nadder” is another dragon who is flighty, aggressive and dangerous. He is quick, and has an explosive temper. Nadder is a large dragon and has a very impressive rap sheet.

His height at shoulders is 4 meters, his length is 12 meters and his wingspan is 9 meters. You can see in detail how large his teeth are and how beautifully colored he is.

“Nadder” has a blind spot in front of his nose, and he has the ability to raise hundreds of sharp spines from his tail and shoot with precise accuracy!

To see some of the dragons in action, take a look at our video below. It features Toothless and Nadder, as well as Head of Puppetry, Gavin Sainsbury doing a demo of how to control the Dragons:

Here are some fun facts about the Dragons in How to Train Your Dragon Live:

  • Each large dragon contains 885 feet of hydraulic hose
  • Each large dragon contains 430 cubic feet of foam
  • Each large dragon weighs 1.6 tons

We had a phenomenal time getting acquainted with these giants an are really excited to see the live show tomorrow on January 17th.

How to Train Your Dragon LIVE will be at the Honda Center from January 17th through the 20th.

Disclosure: We were provided with backstage access and media ticket to the show. All of our thoughts, photos and opinions are of our own.
