Interview with the Cast of Pete’s Dragon

I attended the interview as a guest of Disney

PETE'S DRAGON

Earlier this month, I was given the amazing opportunity to participate in discussions with the stars in the film “Pete’s Dragon,” Bryce Dallas Howard (Grace), Oakes Fegley, (Pete), and Oona Laurence, (Natalie).

Oakes Fegley is Pete and Oona Laurence is Natalie in Disney's PETE'S DRAGON, the story of a boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just happens to be a dragon.

The relationship between Pete and Natalie plays a big part in the film. Fegley said that he felt that when Pete sees another little person, someone like himself, he is very curious about her and needs to explore this relationship.  Fegley continued to say, “In Pete’s mind, he is still five years old.”  For both Fegley and Laurence having to act opposite of something that wasn’t there was challenging at times but very interesting. Laurence said that they had seen a drawing of Elliott, but they were basically looking at a tennis ball on a stick most of the time.

When both actors were asked what it was like to act opposite of screen legend, Robert Redford, they both giggled and said that they hated to admit it, but they didn’t really know who he was or that he was considered acting royalty.  Fegley went on to explain that every actor he’s ever worked with, are just normal people who happen to act for their jobs and Robert Redford is really good at his job.  Fegley said that Mr. Redford is a great inspiration to him.

For Fegley and Laurence, they both said that doing their own stunts was most fun, especially the car chase.  When asked if they were scared to do their own stunts, Laurence said, “Not at all because we were in pre-production for two weeks training with rock climbing, gymnastics, and movement coaches.  It was more like playing and I never really thought to be scared.”

Bryce Dallas Howard is Grace in Disney's PETE'S DRAGON, the adventure of a boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot who just happens to be a dragon.

Howard plays the lovable yet cautious Grace.  Grace is a forest ranger and has long heard the stories her Dad has told about a dragon living in the forest.  Grace only sees what is in front of her, and she doesn’t quite look beyond.  For Howard, Pete’s Dragon is a children’s film and loved getting to play a mom. Not a far stretch, considering she is a mom of two children.  When asked about working with Fegley and Laurence, Howard said, “It was the best. It was a calm, relaxing and inspiring experience. A lot of times, I would ask their advice and what I should do, and they gave some really great suggestions.”

Howard continued to share that she feels this movie shows you what it takes to find your family and that no matter what, in the movie, Pete is Grace’s son, and she is going to be his mother.  Bryce had a way of drawing the audience in and in the scene where she sees Elliott for the first time, you believe that Elliott is real.

PETE'S DRAGON

Of course, we all wanted to know about Howard’s experience working with Robert Redford.  Bryce said, “From day one, he made everyone feel comfortable because he was just Bob; a regular, very cool and awesome guy and one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time.”

Pete’s Dragon was one of her favorites as a child and she often reads the book to her children.  The reimagined vision of Pete’s Dragon, she feels stands alone and will quickly become another Disney classic.

Don’t miss seeing this incredibly talented cast in the upcoming film “Pete’s Dragon” in theaters on August 12th. Learn more about Pete’s Dragon online, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
