Interview with Joey King as China Girl in ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’

When watching Disney’s new “Oz the Great and Powerful,” China Girl played by Joey King instantly won my heart in the film. China Girl is a new character added to the story based off the classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” book in the series by L. Frank Baum. She reminded me so much of my spunky strong-willed young boy, Tyler. China Girl is a porcelain doll who is saved by Oz after losing her family in the destruction caused by the wicked witch. China Girl proves to Oz that she is not as fragile as she looks, but is a strong young girl.

Joey King had the challenge in the film of playing two different characters in the film. In the beginning of the film, she had a traditional acting role as a young girl in a wheel chair at the circus in Kansas. The remaining part of her role in the film was as the CG character China Girl.

Joey King shared how her character appears to be delicate, but is not. “She’s very feisty and sassy and manipulates Oz, and Finley. It’s kinda funny because they all get duped by this little-little doll. A fourteen-inch little girl who is made of porcelain.” said King. “She is definitely manipulative, calculating and very very smart.”

While learning about the film, we had a chance to sit down and talk with Joey King about her role as China Girl in the Disney film, “Oz the Great and Powerful.”
