Invisalign vs. Braces

“I am a member of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board and my son has received complimentary treatment.”

The time has officially come for getting my kids braces. Oddly enough, my kids have been begging me for braces since they first started seeing their friends get them. I had been going back and forth about whether to get them metal braces or Invisalign. I began by searching on the Invisalign doctor locator and found Dr. Passamano in Irvine. He offered both braces and Invisalign to discuss the different options available for my children. My kids counted the days down on the calendar until their first appointment with the orthodontist.

My kids were adamant that they wanted metal braces. Why? I have no idea. They kept talking about the different colors that their friends get to wear in their mouth, and how cool it would be for them to do the same. The minute the doctor began to discuss the different options with us, the kids didn’t look back at the metal option. I felt that our children should take advantage of the new technology that didn’t exist when I had braces, and there was not the large difference in pricing as I had expected.

My daughter, Ella, was the one who wanted braces the most. Unfortunately, the doctor recommended that she wait about 3-4 months until she loses a couple of teeth to get started. While she sat in the corner with tears of disappointment over not getting her braces, her brother was dancing with excitement in the dentist chair over the news that he was a good candidate for Invisalign.

The orthodontist took their time to walk me through the entire process and answered all of my questions. Once we were done discussing the treatment plan, they began the first step of taking molds of Andrew’s teeth. In some orthodontist offices, they have a digital scan but at our office they had to take the molds the traditional way. It was not Andrew’s most favorite thing to have done, but they went slow and did their best to ensure that he was as comfortable as possible.

Once Andrew was done brushing his teeth, we were given a slip to have x-rays done at a different location. I hope that you follow along the journey of my children experiencing Invisalign over the next year. I will be documenting our entire experience to help your family when having to make the decision of Invisalign vs. Braces.

  1. It’s good to see he seems to be enjoying his Invisalign more than he “enjoyed” having the molds for them made. I’m guessing whatever they use to make the mold must taste bad, lol.
