Conversation Starter for Family Discussions with Iron Man 3

“We do live in an unsafe world,” Gwyneth Paltrow.

When I was watching the new movie Iron Man 3, I began to have hesitation on whether it would appropriate for my children. Not that it was inappropriate, but because there were so many references to some of the current global situations we are facing in our world today. When I left the theater, I had my mind made up that I would not bring my tween to see the film, until I heard Gwyneth Paltrow speak at the Iron Man 3 press conference.

Although we do not watch the news in our house, we cannot hide the global terror situations happening in the world from our children. They might hear about terror situations while the news is playing in the background at a restaurant or other adults talking at the park. As much as I want to hide my children in a bubble from the terror happening in the world – the reality is that it is best to talk to the children about it. I have learned over my past 11 years, as a parent, my children are more fearful of what I don’t talk to them about than what we do discuss together.

In the movie, Iron Man 3, there is a lot of reference to terrorism. I am not going to hide that from any parent deciding if they should bring their children to see the film.

Gwyneth Paltrow had a great perspective on it. She said, “We can’t lie to our children and pretend that the world is perfect, and everybody is happy, and everybody is out there to do good.” She continued to talk about how she is dealing with talking about our current situations in the world with her seven-year-old son, and how he has started to get a grasp on the situations because of the way she is presenting it to him. “It’s just part of a bigger conversation,” she said.

Yes, we are living in an unsafe world. Yes, there is tragedy happening daily in our world.

I plan to take my children to see Iron Man 3, with the knowledge that some of the scenes will be part of ongoing conversations that we have together as I prepare them to grow-up and live in the world that we have today.

Iron Man 3 is coming into theaters on May 3rd.
