As a photographer I always have my eye out for things to buy my children that I could eventually use as props, be it hats, toys or costumes. Once my kids out grow the item it goes in my prop box and gets used by my clients. Generally toys last forever but costumes are hit or miss.

Costumes are a bit of a sore subject in my house. My daughter loves her costumes but hardly ever wears them. She loves to dress up but also hates it.

Sure she has dozens of cute frilly items that would make any girl swoon, but only wears the accessories. My daughter’s main complaint is that, it’s itchy. I always give her solutions to her fashion qualms; you can wear a shirt underneath, you can wear another dress underneath, you can wear a bathing suit, you can give up and give the costume to me. All of these solutions have the same response “No it’s still itchy and it’s mine”. Eventually she outgrows the costumes and after two uses I have to throw them out because of the low quality of materials used to make them.

So what does a mom have to do to make her fabric sensitive dress-up loving daughter happy? Make my own costumes (nope not happening), spend crazy amounts of money for a high quality costume (uh no) or search high and low and find a hidden gem (bingo). I went online and found www.justpretendkids.com. My daughter loves the ladybug book series and when I saw that they had a Ladybug collection, I thought why not try them out.

When my daughter opened her box she squealed in excitement. She un-wrapped each item and showed them off. The ladybug bodysuit was made of red velour with lace trimmed demi sleeves as well as lace on the front collar with a ladybug accent. The fabric was sturdy and I knew it would last use after use. The tutu consisted of 3 layers of glittery black tulle on top of a satin skirt. The tulle was hemmed with a red and black polka dot ribbon which prevents the tulle from curling. On the waist of the tutu was a red bow the same ribbon as the hem and to finish off the bow, mini ladybug wing. To complete the costume, we also ordered her ladybug wings, antlers, tights and wand.

My daughter quickly put on her outfit to see if it not only fit but if it was itchy. Luckily it fit and NO ITCHING! I let my daughter wear her costume a few times before I decided to shoot her in it. I wanted to make sure the product was as sturdy as I predicted it to be, and it was. I guess I will be adding this to my props when she grows out of it; so score for mom and score for photographer!
