Kinky Boots: A Must-See for Teenagers

We attended as a guest of the venue

The Broadway musical, Kinky Boots had returned to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts of a limited engagement. I recently took my teenage son with me to see the smashing hit at the luxurious performing arts theatre, and we had the best night singing along to fantastic songs and immersed in the fascinating story.

Before seeing the show, I had anticipated it to be a love story, but as the story unfolded, I quickly learned that it is so much more. Kinky Boots is the story of a son who wanted to branch away from working with his father (in their family business). He wanted to make a name for himself in London with his fiance, and once the son got settled in London, his father passes away, forcing him to go home to run the family business.

With the help of his new friend Lola, the young man is inspired to stop making plain shoes, and begin making funky ‘kinky boots’ for men that want to dress like women.

The story delivers a fantastic message of the importance of treating people how you would like to be treated. Also, that you can change your perspective on things, and that greatness can come of it if you’re willing to take a chance.

We enjoyed the music, and the dancing was phenomenal. I highly encourage parents to bring their teenagers to see Kinky Boots. The message is one that teenagers can benefit from and will be a great conversation starter for parents and their teens.

When talking with my son after seeing Kinky Boots, he felt that he took away these six lessons; pursue the truth, learn something new, accept yourself and you’ll accept others too, let the love shine in, let pride be your guide, and change the world when you change your mind.

Kinky Boots is performing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts until Sunday, February 11th. Tickets are currently available online.
