“Kinky Boots”… the name alone made me want to see this show. Add Tony Award-winning music and lyrics by the colorful and lovable 80’s icon Cyndi Lauper and when I scored an invite to last night’s opening at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, I was all in. I even wore boots.

Produced by Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig with the musical book written by Harvey Fierstein this winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical follows the unlikely friendship of Charlie, a straitlaced shoe factory owner whose inherited business is spiraling downward after the death of his father and Lola, a cross dressing entertainer who helps Charlie breath new life into his floundering factory with her eye for fabulous shoes and her generous soul, or should I say sole, that wins over even the toughest of the factory workers, the burly Don.

Charlie and Lola’s paths cross early on in the musical when Charlie intervenes outside of a club in London where Lola is being harassed. While it’s Charlie who initially tries to save Lola, it’s Lola who ultimately saves Charlie, but not before she accidentally beans him with her stiletto.

With very little dialogue, Lauper’s uplifting, humorous, sometimes touching, and always-memorable music and lyrics along with Director Jerry Mitchell’s Tony Award-winning choreography tell a story of acceptance of self and others that builds throughout the show to the exhilarating finale, “Raise You Up/Just Be”.

This production showcases a fantastic cast that embraces diversity with all shapes and sizes adding credence to the show’s central theme of acceptance. The cast stars Steven Booth as Charlie, Lindsay Nicole Chambers as Lauren, the factory worker who can’t help but fall in love with Charlie, Joe Coots as Don, the burly factory worker who taunts Lola for her ways, Grace Stockdale as Nicola, Charlie’s superficial fiancée, Craig Waletzko as George the factory manager, Andrew Theo Johnson as young Lola, Anthony Picorello as Young Charlie, as well as an incredible ensemble cast.

The star of the production though is Kyle Taylor Parker in the part of Lola. With all the moves and attitude, whether rocking a pair of stilettos or not, a soulful voice, and an uplifting larger than life presence Parker sucks you willingly into the story and Lola’s inspiring message.

Arrive early and allow your footwear fabulousness to shine through by participating in some pre-show fun in the loge and orchestra areas of the lobby including photo-ops with the famous red boots, a walk down the runway, and some boot bedazzling of your own!

“Kinky Boots” is showing now through January 11 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. Tickets start at $29.
