Learn to Live a Little

Whereas it’s true that you have an established comfort zone. It’s human nature to learn what works for you and stick with it. However, are you actually doing yourself any favors by staying where you think it’s cozy and comfy? There is something to be said for experiencing new things and challenging yourself.

The reason you feel at ease inside your comfort zone is simple; you know what to expect. You are avoiding the stress of the unknown, or even worse, perceived failure. Granted, some think if it’s not broken, don’t fix it; striving for personal growth doesn’t come without some minor associated risks. You may be hindering yourself from discovering a hidden talent or passion.

You constantly hear about reducing anxiety and possibly wrongly think that all anxiety is a bad thing; it isn’t! Anxiety can also be an amazing tool to remind you you’re living. Think about something you were afraid to do, but that you talked yourself into doing it and afterward thought, “that wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. I was worried for nothing!”

New experiences are literally waiting for you every day. If you want to be a lawyer but you’re afraid you’ll not pass the LSAT or get into law school, do you give up your dream career? Of course not! You know going in it’s going to require a lot of work. So you do your LSAT prep and anticipate the next exciting chapter of your life.

The truth of the matter is, life exists outside of your thoughts and feelings about what you consider to be your little bubble of comfort. In order to live, which is very different from just existing, it is important to let all of life’s experiences shape you. Even those things you may not think are your “thing”. Until you’ve endured both failure and success, how would you ever know what you’re good at? Personal growth comes from accepting challenges and opening yourself up to trying new things.

Don’t Settle

You only have one shot at this thing called life. You’d be doing yourself a huge disservice to settle for things you’re comfortable with instead of going after your passions and dreams. People settle for less than or for mediocrity because it allows them to either emotionally or mentally stay inside their comfort zone. The beauty of expanding your horizons is that you learn new things and that knowledge or experience grows your comfort zone.

Something you may have never considered is that you’re not the only one afraid to fail. Every time someone tries something new they risk failing before they succeed. Don’t avoid trying something new because your ego is stopping you. Stay positive. Keep an open mind. Know that if things don’t go the best possible way, you know how to change your approach for the next time. Yes, next time; only those who refuse to try never actually fail.

Your self-confidence will thank you for venturing out and succeeding. Plenty of other people with the same, if not more, fear and anxiety have challenged themselves and been victorious. Sometimes it isn’t about having as much talent as it is about having the guts to try.

You are and will always be your biggest critic. Cut yourself some slack. Remember when your mom told you that you could do anything you put your mind to? She didn’t say that because of some unwritten rule that parents have to say such things to their kids. She said it because she wanted you to have the confidence in yourself that she has in you.
