A guys weekend with fast cars…doesn’t get much better than that.

We had a great weekend at the Grand Prix of Long Beach this past weekend.  Stopping by the Verizon FiOS setup was great; we both got to hang out with Mike, the SoCal FiOS fleet lead, who walked us through the special characteristics of both of their vehicles.  It was cool to get an up close look at the both vehicles but our favorite by far was the VW bus.

Mike and the team drive the Verizon FiOS vehicles to various events in the region and the VW bus is the embodiment of the SoCal lifestyle.  The 1965 VW Bus has been been retrofitted to include a 42 inch Hi-def TV on the back bulkhead, a vintage radio with moderm amenities including Bluetooth technology and an X-Box, offering connectivity to the FiOS high speed network, it stays true to original form in its looks and finer touches.

For example, the roof rack (which no doubt hauled many surfboards to SoCal beaches over the years!) is 100% original, and while the audio system electronics are the latest greatest, the actual radio tuner looks original as does the interior upholstery.  The original styling is why Mike and team are constantly stopped by VW owners and fans who share the stories of their adventures from back in the day.  The VW van is a great way for Mike and team to engage people and share information about Verizon FiOS.

Be sure you keep an eye out in Southern California for the Verizon FiOS So Cal fleet over the next few months so you can check out this SoCal gem of a VW for yourself.   You may also spot the FiOS Jeep Wrangler Moab, which is also teched out with everything one could want.  The FiOS team can MC events from their Jeep Wrangler with the microphone and enjoy some down time playing Xbox with customers as well!

Getting a “behind the scenes” look in the Paddock at the race teams setups for working on their vehicles was amazing; the mix of old fashioned elbow grease and know how mixed with state of the art technology was incredible to see.  Happily, we can both report that we found our next Anniversary gifts from our wives as well.

One thing we appreciated about the grounds and setup at the Long Beach Grand Prix was that the whole event was a reasonable size for walking and getting from one part of the event to another.  It wasn’t overly large, which our feet and back were thankful for.  Children, parents, and grandparents can all traverse the event without issue.  The ability to have some fun in the SoCal sun and watch the race but stop in the air conditioned main event hall and either take the kids into the FunZone or check out the variety of automobile industry vendors while having a snack was a great balance.
