Looking Further with Ford CEO Alan Mulally

Ford Motor Company paid for my travel and accommodations at the three- day NAIAS Digital Summit. I was not compensated in any other manner for my time. My opinions posted here are my own.


While at the International Auto Show, last week, we had a unique opportunity to learn more about Ford Motor Company from their CEO, Alan Mulally. Mulally served at Boeing for 37 years on the design team for every Boeing airplane. It was not until he got the compelling phone call from Bill Ford that he made the decision to leave Boeing and come to Ford Motor Company. “Ford had some real issues. The economy was slowing down, and the fuel prices were going up.” said Mulally.

“Seven years ago, we started out on a journey and made some really big decisions,” said Mulally. One of their decisions was to serve all markets around the world. When looking at the markets around the world, “About 1/3 of vehicles being sold will be in the Americas, 1/3 in Europe, Africa and Russia, and growing the fastest will be the Asia-Pacific,” said Mulally. Another decision was for Ford to look at the size of the vehicles. “About 60% of the vehicles will be smaller in size worldwide,” said Mulally. What we saw at the International Auto Show with the line-up of Ford vehicles, was eight years of Ford Motor Company investing in the product line and production facilities around the world.

One of the significant topics of discussion that is always on the minds of so many people is fuel efficiency. “Whether you are driving a Fiesta, or an F-350 the consumer wants the very best fuel efficiencies no matter what the size of the vehicle,” said Mulally. Fuel efficiency is an important part of the cost, plus consumers care about the environment.

Ford has a very detailed roadmap to their technology strategy. When it comes to the technology development of the different engines, “The most important thing we can do to make a difference is continually to work on improving the internal combustion engine – the most important thing. The internal combustion engine is going to be around a long time. It’s harder to find oil in the market now, but it is such an efficient medium that it is going to be around for a while,” said Mulally.

#1 thing we can do is to every year improve this engine.” Alan Mulally.

Fords biggest improvement in fuel mileage will come with the all-new F-150 that will be made with aluminum. Aluminum is stronger than steel, and in the past it has cost more than steel. With the aluminum body in the F-150, they can take 700 pounds of weight out of the vehicle, downsize the engine, making the care more fuel-efficient.

“Everything we do is improving the fuel mileage ever year,” said Mulally.


Looking further Mulally talked about the importance of a bigger infrastructure to grow more alternative fueled engines. “We need the infrastructure to build out more so that we can charge our batteries, but we also need to solve to the problem of generating clean electricity,” said Mulally.

Ford is one of the leading car manufacturers who is looking forward to helping families save money, protect our environment and natural resources. This was one of the biggest years for Ford Motor Company, and the key to their success is, “Our company all pulls together and works as a team to deliver great products,” said Mulally.
