The Magical Return of Mary Poppins

I attended a screening as a guest of Disney

Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear…

In the magical film, Mary Poppins Returns, John Banks goes outside to fly a kite. That is when the clouds began to darken, the winds started to blow, and with the help of Jack, they attempt to bring the kite down out of the wind. That is when the dark sky turns to light, and out of clouds comes Mary Poppins holding John’s kite.

The film takes off right where the first Mary Poppins left off and featured Michael and Jane banks all grown-up. Michael has lost his wife and struggling to raise his two children, John and Anabel. Mary Poppins arrives at the perfect time to help bring the family back together during a rough time in their life.

Not only has Michael lost his wife, but he is also facing financial difficulties with the possibility of the Banks losing their home. The film particularly touched my heart, and the position that Michael is in is one that many fathers are experiencing in today’s world.

The message of the film is to find light when there is darkness in the world. With there being so much darkness in our current world, I felt like this was the perfect time for this story to be told. Rob Marshall said it best when he said, “You have to look at your life from a different point of view, and look for the light.”

The film features some of our favorite songs from the original Mary Poppins along with some new ones. Lin-Manuel Miranda gave an epic performance on the screen as Jack. And when it came to Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, I felt like I was watching Julie Andrews on the screen. It was fun watching Mary Poppins, and Jack flirt a little just like they did in the first film.

With so many movies coming out every week, I feel like over the years, the timeless classic, Mary Poppins had gotten pushed to the back of my home movie collections. With the release of this movie, my children’s generation gets to relive the magic of Mary Poppins just the way that my generation did as children. Rob Marshall went to great lengths to protect the first film, and he said, “It wanted to treat this film with great care and love,” which he honestly did.

I fell in love with Mary Poppins all over again when watching the film. She still had that charm-like wonder within her, a passion for adventure and so much humanity. I loved how they had the credits at the beginning of the movie just like they did in the original and that it the lighting in the film felt very similar to the first.

Mary Poppins Returns is a film that you must take your children to see this holiday season. Mary Poppins is such a big part of, and we all hold her so close to our hearts. After your children see Mary Poppins Returns, they will have the same magical feeling about this extraordinary woman.

Mary Poppins Returns is out in theaters next Friday, December 21st. Learn more about Mary Poppins Returns online, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
