MAMMA MIA! A Smashing Hit at The Segerstrom Center for the Arts

MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical arrived at Segerstrom Center for the Arts Tuesday evening and by the end of opening night guests couldn’t stay in their seats!

Seen by more than 54 million people worldwide, MAMMA MIA!, is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new-found family. Over its history MAMMA MIA! boasts more than 5,000 performances on Broadway and is hailed as the tenth longest-running show in all of Broadway history.*

MAMMA MIA! is staged in the exotic Greek Isles.  The show is led by Donna Sheridan (Georgia Kate Haege) who has worked hard to raise her beautiful daughter, Sophie Sheridan (Chelsea Williams), all on her own. But, in the time preceding Sophie’s wedding, her longing to find her father, and as such understand more about her true self, becomes unbearable and she sets off a series of events that result in the past colliding with the present, causing just a little bit of hysteria. Told with humor and energy, laid to upbeat ABBA music and with stellar performing, MAMMA MIA! is the feel-good show that everyone is sure to enjoy.

It’s no wonder the musical has gained such popularity.  I personally smiled through the entire performance.  The characters are endearing, the plot enjoyable, the music and dancing fantastic and the staging and effects on par with what one has come to expect at Segerstrom.  My husband accompanied me, and while he is not generally a theater fan, declared he really enjoyed it during intermission; now that is an impressive accolade from a tough critic!

Several fun photo opportunities are available in the Center before and after the performance and during intermission. A MAMMA MIA! timeline banner is on display, which features fun and historical facts and figures about ABBA, MAMMA MIA! and Segerstrom Center. Guests are encouraged to post photos on  social media and use hashtag #MammaMiaOC. Also, following Thursday evening’s performance on April 10, audience members are invited to stay after the show and enjoy a Q&A session with cast members from MAMMA MIA!*
